Wisconsin should run all over South Florida, and I just don't see how the Bulls keep up with the Badgers for four quarters. Even if it is close early, and the home Tampa crowd should certainly help USF, Wisconsin is coming into 2019 angry after a 2018 that fell far below expectations. Expect a clean double-digit win for the Badgers.
There weren't many defenses in the country last season worse against the run than South Florida. The Bulls allowed 5.12 yards per carry last season, which ranked 114th nationally. All of which leads me to believe that going against Jonathan Taylor and the Wisconsin offense isn't a great matchup for the Bulls here. I think Wisconsin gets the best of this one.
The Badgers were a bit overrated last season at 4-9 ATS on an 8-5 squad, and I think the same could be said in their first game with a new starting QB, junior Jack Coan, who barely won the job from a freshman. The point spread makes sense if Wisconsin was playing at home, but the Badgers are at South Florida and the Bulls offense brings back nine starters, including QB Blake Barnett. South Florida might win this one outright, but I took the points.
Scheduling an August game in Florida might seem risky on Wisconsin’s part. But this one unfolds under the lights, and possible rainy conditions could favor the run-minded visitors from a chillier climate. The Badgers will pound RB Jonathan Taylor and cohorts at a defense that was ranked second-to-last in the AAC against the rush. Wisconsin travels well, having gone 13-4 ATS on the road going back nearly four seasons, while USF has failed to cover in the past five at home.
We've seen this line drop a bit, and I don't understand why. Maybe there's a bit of uncertainty with true freshman QB Graham Mertz making his first collegiate start on the road. But, I have more confidence in the young 18- year old than I do in the well-traveled Blake Barnett at USF. Where I also have more confidence, is in the Badgers offensive line with Heisman Trophy candidate Jonathan Taylor running behind it.
