INDEPENDENCE BOWL -- There already was value on the underdog int his one, because Duke might be the slightly better team if both clubs are at their best. The departure of coach Geoff Collins could create a motivational question for the Owls. Moreover, Duke QB Daniel Jones is surging up pro scouting reports now that Justin Herbert of Oregon announced he's staying in school. Jones will be motivated to excel in a national showcase game. Due coach David Cutcliffe also is noted for having his teams prepared in these spots.
INDEPENDENCE BOWL -- After early-season struggles, the Temple Owls have been on a tear recently. Defensively they've gotten it together and their offense has done a great job of being both fast-paced and productive. The great unknown will be how they react to the departure of head coach Geoff Collins, who left for Georgia Tech. But with Duke QB Daniel Jones tending to struggle against pressure, I'll back Temple to rally despite losing its coach. Lay the points.
INDEPENDENCE BOWL -- Make no mistake: Temple is the superior team. Yet two significant factors tilt this selection to the underdog, with an attractive -- i.e., above four -- number. First, Owls coach Geoff Collins has departed. Second, Blue Devis coach David Cutcliffe has not. The crafty Cutcliffe, 8-2 ATS in the postseason with four wins in a row, usually has the coaching edge when afforded a month to prepare. And though the Dookies finished with two bad losses, the roll call of straight-up victims this season -- Army, Northwestern, Baylor, Georgia Tech and Miami -- attests to their abilities.
