Ohio State’s vaunted offensive attack should not skip a beat against a Penn State team that hasn’t been tested to this degree. Grab the Buckeyes.
As someone who has followed Urban Meyer's entire career, the knowledge that he has won 20 straight regular-season games coming off bye weeks is not in the least bit foreign to me. What should be noted is that those 20 games did not all come against a No. 2-ranked opponent on an absolute roll since the middle of last season. Ohio State's loss to Oklahoma is forgivable, and its dominant play over the last five games is not completely a party trick. The opponents may not have been great, but the Buckeyes did what a great team is supposed to do and throttled them. Still, the Nittany Lions are another caliber, and a full touchdown is just too many points. I do think PSU can win straight up, but the touchdown is the play here.
It's not often you can fade the public while backing Ohio State, but such is the case Saturday as the Buckeyes host Penn State. Many observers are smitten with the Lions based in large part on their destruction of Michigan last week, but this sets up as a great spot for the Buckeyes. They are looking to avenge last year's road loss to Penn State while also looking to improve their resume after losing to Oklahoma earlier this season. A convincing win over Penn State would go a long way toward that goal.
Ohio State’s offense has become a wrecking ball, with 500-plus yards in five consecutive efforts. The Buckeyes benefit from a week off. As a result, Penn State supporters are being handed a generous 6.5 points, which should be enough for a cover. The Nittany Lions are deploying wondrous RB Saquon Barkley in a variety of innovative ways, and OSU’s edge at quarterback is smaller than common perception. PSU’s tough Trace McSorley is solid, even if he is no J.T. Barrett, and will not be cowed by the Buckeyes’ crowd. Of the last half-dozen road games, Penn State has covered in five, while the Buckeyes are on a 1-4 ATS slump at home.
The home team has covered the past four meetings and the Buckeyes have revenge on their minds, as well as a National Championship. Penn State is loaded, but this is a letdown spot after huge home win over Michigan despite PSU having championship goals as well. PSU covers almost every game (5-1 ATS), but its one ATS slip-up was on the road at Iowa. The Buckeyes haven't played anyone since losing to Oklahoma, but they've practiced well against them all and J.T. Barrett has 18 TDs and no picks in the five games since the OU loss. Buckeyes get the cover in a high-scoring game.
