So I waited late last night after the USC double-OT win over Rutgers to see what this line would be and planning to hammer a Purdue ML number I knew would skyrocket almost immediately due to the Trojans' extra time on the court Wednesday. I was hoping -200ish to where I might have a decent play to play on PU but nope. And it makes sense with all those Trojans playing 40-plus minutes -- Wesley Yates played all 50. He's now my favorite Wesley since Princess Bride. In normal circumstances, I think Purdue is 3 points better at a neutral site than USC. Even in this scenario, maybe 6-7 in my opinion. If you go by 247Sports, USC has a much more talented roster.
With USC's overtime win over Rutgers yesterday they grab a win in the Big Ten tourney moving to 16-16. They are the perfect .500 team that covered 13 of those games, and they go up against Purdue who's got some egg on their face for their February play. One win for USC in the tourney might be good enough to satisfy. Purdue lost their last game at Illinois and before that lost four straight, three of them on the road from February 11th to February 23rd. But just before that four-game losing streak, they beat USC, 90-72. Purdue shoots 49.6% from the field which is 6th in the nation and USC doesn't defend allowing opponents to shoot 46%. Purdue wins by 15 or more.
Purdue holds a quasi-home court edge. The Boilermakers have played 10 times in this building the past five seasons, winning eight, and get to play in their home state. USC came from three time zones away and brought few fans. Purdue drubbed the Trojans by 18 in the regular season. USC needed two overtimes late Wednesday night to advance, with Wesley Yates III never leaving the floor and other starters going 48, 46, 42 and 41 minutes,. Only two subs logged minutes. What's more, coach Eric Musselman has been ill all week. Purdue could not ask for a more favorable scenario.
