Heisman Trophy odds update: Off big win, Miami quarterback D'Eriq King becomes third favorite

Could D'Eriq King become the third Miami Hurricanes player to win a Heisman Trophy? His odds have improved.

Is "the U" back? That's worth a discussion off Miami's impressive 47-34 upset win at Louisville on Saturday night in the first ranked game of the season. UM transfer quarterback D'Eriq King definitely made a Heisman statement in the victory in completing 18 of 30 for 325 yards with three touchdowns and no picks. That jumped the Texas native to the +600 third-favored role on the Heisman Trophy futures from SportsLine oddsmakers.

On the season, King is completing 63 percent of his passes for 469 yards, four scores and no picks. He also has rushed for 92 yards and a touchdown but was quiet on the ground vs. the Cardinals. His FBS record with at least one rushing and passing touchdown came to an end at 16 games. The Hurricanes haven't had a Heisman winner since Geno Torretta in 1992.

Saturday's victory jumped Miami from No. 17 in the Associated Press Top 25 to No. 12. King will get to showcase his talents to another national TV audience this Saturday when the Canes host Florida State at 7:30 p.m. ET on ABC. Miami is an 11.5-point favorite at William Hill sportsbook.

FSU will be without head coach Mike Norvell as he tested positive for the coronavirus. Deputy head coach Chris Thomsen has taken over. The Seminoles are on a seven-game losing streak straight up on the road and is 1-7-1 ATS in their past nine away. However, they are 6-1 SU and ATS in their past seven at Miami.

Should Miami win Saturday, King could really boost his Heisman case in a huge matchup on Oct. 10 at top-ranked Clemson. Tigers quarterback Trevor Lawrence is the +300 Heisman co-favorite with Ohio State QB Justin Fields.

Fields wasn't on the odds list last week because the Big Ten hadn't officially decided to play this fall. Now the league has. Fields and the Buckeyes open Oct. 24 at home vs. Nebraska.

Lawrence probably could have put up video game numbers this past Saturday against overmatched The Citadel but Coach Dabo Swinney pulled him (and star running back Travis Etienne) very early in the blowout. The projected No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, Lawrence was 8-for-9 for 168 yards with three TDs and rushed for a score. Clemson is off this week.

The Pac-12 has yet to announce its return to play but could any day now. Should that be the case, Southern Cal QB Kedon Slovis would be added to this list.
