NFL bragging rights in Texas are on the line Sunday when the Houston Texans visit the Dallas Cowboys. Oddsmakers clearly expect a blowout as the Cowboys are 17-point favorites – the biggest spread in the league this year. Houston coach Lovie Smith, who probably is going to be one-and-done with the Texans, is reportedly going back to Davis Mills as his starting quarterback after benching him for the past two games.

The Cowboys have been at least 17-point favorites just once this century. On Sept. 22, 2019 at home vs. the Dolphins, Dallas was -22 and covered in a 31-6 win. Houston is 0-4 straight up all-time as at least a 17-point underdog but 2-2 against the spread. The spread was that wide for the Texans twice in 2021, and both games resulted in losses -- 31-5 at Arizona and 40-0 at Buffalo.

Dallas leads the NFL in point differential at +127 and has won three straight games all by at least eight points. Houston has just one victory and the league's worst point differential at minus-99.

Houston had the No. 1 waiver priority this week but opted not to claim former No.1 overall pick Baker Mayfield after he was released by Carolina. He would eventually be claimed by the Rams. Mills had a solid rookie season in 2021 as a third-round pick out of Stanford but hasn't been good this year. He's completed 61.9% of his passes for 2,144 yards, 11 touchdowns and 11 picks for a rating of 78.1 (compared to 88.8 last year) that is 30th among qualified QBs.

Journeyman Kyle Allen started the past two games and was worse statistically, totaling just 29 points in double-digit losses to Cleveland and Miami. Allen had five turnovers in those games and accounted for two scores in the defeat to the Browns with a pick and fumble -- both returned for TDs.

The Texans will likely get the top pick in the 2023 NFL Draft and all but certainly taking a quarterback. Alabama's Bryce Young and Ohio State's CJ Stroud are the +150 co-favorites to be the top pick.
