Matt Ryan 2022 NFL season odds, props: Bettors expecting big season from Colts quarterback

Bettors at Caesars Sportsbook are all over Colts quarterback Matt Ryan in terms of his passing yardage total.

Ahead of the 2021 season, the Indianapolis Colts traded for veteran NFC quarterback Carson Wentz and it didn't really work out -- the Colts imploded at the end of the year and missed the playoffs. The Wentz experiment was over. Ahead of this season, Indy traded for another veteran NFC quarterback in Matt Ryan. It remains to be seen if that move will be successful, but bettors at Caesars Sportsbook are hammering Ryan on his passing yardage prop.

Ryan's over/under season total has risen from 3750.5 yards to 3,777.5. It's not an incredible jump, but the former NFL MVP has gotten the most Over tickets and money of any quarterback on a yardage total. There has not been a single Under bet on Ryan's total at Caesars as of this writing.

He spent last year working with one of the worst skill position groups in the NFL – especially after Calvin Ridley was shut down after only five games – and Ryan still managed to throw for 3,968 yards. In fact, Ryan has thrown for more than 3,777.5 yards in every season since 2011. The likely future Hall-of-Famer has been incredibly durable, missing only three total games in his career: two in 2009 and one in 2019.

The Colts have much better offensive talent around Ryan than the Falcons did in featured back Jonathan Taylor, pass-catching back Nyheim Hines, and receivers Michael Pittman Jr. and Parris Campbell -- and wideout TY Hilton is still out there as a free agent. One potential hinderance to Ryan putting up huge yardage in 2022 is that the Colts are going to run the ball a ton behind Taylor, the reigning NFL rushing champion. Taylor is a +400 favorite at Caesars to lead in rushing yards again and +700 favorite for Offensive Player of the Year.

A new wrinkle for Ryan this year is that Indy runs a lot of run-pass options: "When he got here, Matt had said, 'Hey, I haven't done a ton of this RPO stuff, but I've kind of seen it on tape a lot,'" head coach and offensive play-caller Frank Reich said. "You've got to have a quick mind, make good decisions and then be accurate with the ball, because it's a short throw, there's usually going to be a small window and you've got to get it out quick. Obviously, all those things fit him. That's why it was like: 'Hey, you're going to be good at this.'"

Ryan is +2000 to lead the NFL in passing yards, something he's never done before. For most passing TDs, Ryan is also +2000, and he never led that category with Atlanta either. To win a second MVP, Ryan is +4500.

The Colts open the season in Houston and are -8, the biggest favorites on the Week 1 board.
