Giants vs. Eagles NFL Week 18 injury report, odds, props: Jalen Hurts expected to start despite limited practices; Philadelphia defense can set single-season sacks record

The Eagles will be the NFC's top seed with a home win over the New York Giants on Sunday.

The Philadelphia Eagles have had a chance to wrap up the NFC East title and conference's top seed the past two games but lost both without starting quarterback and one-time MVP favorite Jalen Hurts. It is expected that Hurts will return Sunday in the regular-season home finale against the Giants as the Eagles try again to clinch both titles, although Hurts has been limited at practice all week. The Philly defense could set the single-season sack record on Sunday, and SportsLine offers odds whether they'll do so.

It would be an upset if Hurts doesn't play. Top receiver AJ Brown said Jalen Hurts took some first team-reps Thursday and expects his starter under center: "I think he will be fine Sunday." Hurts has not been a full participant in practice since suffering a sprain to his right shoulder against the Bears on Dec. 18.

If the Eagles do win, they would earn the lone bye week in the NFC, and Hurts could go back into bubble wrap for a week. Ideally, the Eagles get out to a big lead Sunday and pull Hurts. The Giants are locked into the NFC's No. 6 seed and have nothing to play for, but head coach Brian Daboll has said his starters will take the field. However, several beat writers around the club are casting serious doubt on that. Daboll will make his final decision tonight.

Daboll doesn't have any track record for how he'll handle this type of game considering that he's a first-year head coach. But in 2019 when he was offensive coordinator in Buffalo, the Bills were locked into the No. 5 seed in the AFC entering the regular season finale and rested most of their starters. Quarterback Josh Allen played one quarter. In 2020, the Bills were locked into the No. 2 or 3 seed and they played Allen and other starters, but pulled them at the half with a big lead.

The NFL single-season record for sacks is 72 by the 1984 Chicago Bears under legendary defensive coordinator (and eventual Eagles head coach) Buddy Ryan. The Eagles finished second-to-last in sacks last year with 29 but have 68 this season. They also are the first team with four players to each have at least 10 sacks since the individual sack became an official statistic in 1982. Those four players are linebacker Haason Reddick, (16 sacks), ends Brandon Graham (11) and Josh Sweat (11) and tackle Javon Hargrave (11).

Philadelphia could also break the NFL record with a sixth straight game of at least six sacks on Sunday. When the Eagles routed the Giants 48-22 in Week 14, they logged seven sacks – four of Jones and three of backup Tyrod Taylor. Sweat is questionable for Sunday with a neck injury.

Via SportsLine oddsmakers: Will the Eagles break the NFL single-season record for sacks of 72 (at least 5 Sunday)?
