Carolina Panthers No. 1 overall 2023 NFL draft pick odds: CJ Stroud new favorite over Bryce Young following trade with Chicago Bears

The Carolina Panthers are on the clock as they now pick first overall in the 2023 NFL Draft.

A few sportsbooks out there had a prop on whether the Chicago Bears would trade quarterback Justin Fields by the 2023 NFL Draft so the team could start anew on a rookie contract with whichever QB was selected by GM Ryan Poles at No. 1 overall. The last odds this writer saw was Fields at +600 to be traded and -1500 for no. The answer is no as the Bears have traded that top pick to the Carolina Panthers in a blockbuster, and DraftKings offers updated odds on who goes first – there has been a change.

In return for the top pick, which has been dealt for the first time since 2016, Chicago will get wide receiver DJ Moore, the Panthers' 2023 first-round pick, No. 9 overall, the 61st pick, another first-rounder in 2024 and a second-rounder in 2025. The 25-year-old Moore is under team control on a good contract through 2025. The 2018 first-round pick from Maryland had 63 catches for 888 yards and seven TDs last year when the Cats had terrible QB play. Moore has three seasons of at least 1,110 yards under his belt.

Quarterback is why the Panthers moved up as they clearly will now take one of Kentucky's Will Levis, Alabama's Bryce Young, Ohio State's CJ Stroud or Florida's Anthony Richardson.

Young and Stroud were much more accomplished in college but there are questions about Young's size and Stroud's mobility. Levis and Richardson are excellent athletes with cannon arms but some accuracy issues. Richardson might have the highest ceiling of the four but the biggest bust factor, and he is so raw that starting in 2023 might be a pipe dream -- the worse Carolina is in 2023, the better for Chicago in 2024. The Cats have new offensive-minded head coach in Frank Reich.

Of course, the last time Carolina picked first overall (and only time) that worked out well as it took Auburn QB Cam Newton, who would win Offensive Rookie of the Year and eventually an MVP.  Richardson has been compared to him. Young had been the betting favorite as the top pick before this trade.

The first round of the draft is April 27 from Kansas City. Players from Ohio State have gone first three times, last offensive lineman Orlando Pace in 1997.

Via DraftKings: Which player will Carolina pick first overall?

    • CJ Stroud -160
    • Bryce Young +150
    • Anthony Richardson +425
    • Will Levis +2500
    • Other +5000 & higher
