2022 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year odds: Texans running back Dameon Pierce new betting leader

Houston's Dameon Pierce is off to a terrific start to his NFL career.

The Houston Texans have had two winners of the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year Award in their history. The 2022 season may now produce the team's first offensive winner, as fourth-round running back Dameon Pierce has taken over at the +450 betting favorite for Offensive Rookie of the Year at Caesars Sportsbook.

The 5-foot-10, 220-pound Pierce is nearly impossible to bring down -- if you haven't seen his amazing broken-tackle-after-broken-tackle run on Sunday in Houston's win at Jacksonville, see the tweet below. Overall, Pierce had a whopping 17 missed tackles forced on runs vs. the Jaguars, the most Pro Football Focus has ever recorded in a single game.

Pierce started the year a bit slow as rookies will do, but in Week 3 at Chicago, he had 20 carries for 80 yards and a touchdown. In Week 4 against the Chargers, Pierce had a career-high 131 yards and a score. And Sunday against the Jags, he totaled 26 carries for 99 yards and a touchdown. Just imagine what could happen if he gets a good quarterback (sorry Davis Mills, but you aren't the answer).

The 22-year-old overall has 86 carries for 412 yards (most among rookies) and three scores (more rushing TDs than the likes of Christian McCaffrey, Joe Mixon, Leonard Fournette and Ezekiel Elliott). He is one of only nine rookie running backs this century to rush for over 400 yards through five weeks of a season, with the most recent being Josh Jacobs of the Las Vegas Raiders in 2019. Jacobs finished second to Kyler Murray for Offensive Rookie of the Year.

Texans head coach Lovie Smith says it's too early to talk about the Rookie of the Year race yet: "It's a little early. He's a rookie and he's playing well. I haven't seen all of the rookies out there. I just know that our rookie, we've loved him from the start. It's not a bandwagon-type thing. We believed in this guy and what he can do. He's letting other people kind of see it a little bit. Again, for us to be talking that way, the offensive line and the guys that are blocking for him, they have to be doing their job. I just know after a quarter of football, we like where he is. Much more to go, but I like the way he's trending."

Houston is off this week so Pierce might lose his favored spot. That being said, the second favorite is Saints receiver Chris Olave at +500, and he might miss Week 6 after leaving this past Sunday vs. Seattle with a concussion.

Also on the rise is Jets running back Breece Hall at +600, the first running back off the board at No. 36 overall. The former Iowa State star just had his best professional game with 18 carries for 97 yards and a touchdown and two catches for 100 yards in an upset of Miami. The 197 total yards set a franchise record by a rookie and were the most by any Jets player since running back Isaiah Crowell's 231 yards against the Denver Broncos in 2018. Hall has 488 yards from scrimmage through five games, which is tied for 11th among all players in the NFL.

Hall is a cousin of former 49ers great Roger Craig, a three-time Super Bowl champion who in 1985 became the first player in NFL history to produce 1,000 rushing and 1,000 receiving yards in the same season. The Jets also have another solid back in second-year Michael Carter, and he vultured two short TDs from Hall on Sunday.
