Mavericks vs. Jazz Monday NBA injury report, odds: Luka Doncic out, Kyrie Irving will not make Dallas debut

Kyrie Irving was traded to the Dallas Mavericks on Sunday but will not debut Monday.

SportsLine oddsmakers listed the Dallas Mavericks as the fourth favorites to land Brooklyn Nets All-Star Kyrie Irving in a trade ahead of Thursday's NBA Trade Deadline, and the Mavericks did indeed win the Irving sweepstakes on Sunday. Dallas will be quite short-handed for Monday's matchup with the Utah Jazz. Irving won't yet be available, Luka Doncic will be out, and starters Spencer Dinwiddie and Dorian Finney-Smith were just sent to Brooklyn in the trade. Thus, the Jazz are 9.5-point favorites at Caesars Sportsbook.

The Mavericks dealt Dinwiddie (a former Nets guard), Finney-Smith, and unprotected 2029 first-round pick and second-round picks in 2027 and 2029 to the Nets in exchange for Irving and forward Markieff Morris. The Lakers had been favorites to land Irving and it's where he wanted to go, but the Nets preferred Dallas' package that included getting a point guard and wing to add to the roster plus future draft picks. Brooklyn still thinks it can contend this season when Kevin Durant returns from his knee injury.

It's a pretty solid return for Irving, who is averaging 27.1 points, 5.3 assists and 5.1 rebounds per game. He's a top-10 talent in the NBA -- but can also a top-10 headache. Iriving has a tendency to wear out his welcome with teams very quickly – ask the Cavaliers and Celtics previously. He is also set for unrestricted free agency this summer, and he may well go sign with the Lakers anyway to play with LeBron James again.

That's the future Mavericks owner Mark Cuban risks in finally landing another star opposite Doncic. At PointsBet, the Dallas futures odds shifted from +2000 to +1200 to win the NBA title and +1200 to +600 to win the West. Dinwiddie was third in the team in scoring at 17.7 PPG and added 5.3 assists per game, and Finney-Smith averaged 9.1 points and 4.7 rebounds. Big man Maxi Kleber remains out injured and center Christian Wood has missed the past eight with a thumb issue, but might return tonight.

Because of the logistics of a trade (travel, passing a physical, etc.), Irving won't make his Dallas debut until Wednesday against the Los Angeles Clippers, who also wanted him. That's also when Doncic may be back -- he's dealing with a heel injury that kept him out Saturday at Golden State and will keep him sidelined again Monday. The Mavs are 0-7 when Doncic doesn't play this year. Doncic is second in the NBA in scoring at 33.4 PPG, and he and Irving are now the league's highest-scoring duo.

If you are wondering, the Nets and Mavericks already have concluded their season series.

The SportsLine Projection Model (below) only slightly upgrades a fully healthy Dallas with Irving but downgraded Brooklyn a fair amount. At DraftKings, the Nets are now +2500 to win the NBA title and +750 to win the East. The Lakers, interestingly, rose from +2500 to win it all to +5000, as they were favored to get Irving.
