2023 AL Cy Young Award odds: Gerrit Cole, Carlos Rodon Yankees parlay vs. field off board with Rodon injury

The Yankees got some concerning news on starting pitcher Carlos Rodon.

BetMGM had an MLB prop active on the New York Yankees' Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodon in a parlay at +340 against the rest of the American League to win the Cy Young Award, with the field at -500. That prop is now off the board with the news that Rodon will open the regular season on the injured list with a left forearm strain – which can be a precursor to Tommy John surgery.

Rodon is a fabulous pitcher when healthy, as evidenced by his 27 wins, 2.67 ERA, 0.998 WHIP and 422 strikeouts over 54 starts over the past two seasons with the San Francisco Giants and Chicago White Sox. However, the 30-year-old southpaw's free-agent market wasn't quite as robust as it would have been for someone with those numbers because of some health concerns. Rodon spent time on the injured list every year from 2016-2018 before finally blowing out his arm and undergoing Tommy John surgery after seven appearances with the White Sox in 2019.

The 2022 season with the Giants marked just the second year of Rodon's career in which he pitched more than 140 innings, with the first coming in 2016 with Chicago. He opted out of his contract after going 14-8 with a 2.88 ERA and 1.03 WHIP last year in San Francisco to earn a second straight All-Star selection and signed a six-year, $162 million deal with the Yankees.

Rodon was scheduled to throw a bullpen session Wednesday, which was then pushed to Thursday, before going for an MRI that revealed the forearm strain. Yankees GM Brian Cashman said that Rodon's UCL (the ligament that is repaired with Tommy John) is fine, but that he won't throw for the next week or so. Rodon had been scheduled to pitch the second game of the season on April 1 at Yankee Stadium against the Giants. He has made just one spring appearance, in whic he allowed five runs during two-plus innings against the Braves on March 1.

"If this was Aug. 18, pennant race … he's still probably up and running," Cashman said. "You don't ever want to downplay anything … but it's going to cost him time. He's worth the wait. All we want honestly is the real deal when he's capable of providing it."

BetMGM still lists Rodon among the AL Cy Young favorites at +1000. Cole is the +600 co-favorite along with new Texas Rangers right-hander Jacob deGrom, an injury concern himself.

The Yankees are already without another starting pitcher in Frankie Montas, who underwent shoulder surgery and isn't expected back until August at the earliest. Domingo German and Clarke Schmidt are expected to fill in for Rodon and Montas.
