PESCOCOSTANZO, Italy -- Gabriele Bosisio won the seventh stage of the Giro d'Italia in a solo breakaway Friday, and Giovanni Visconti retained the overall lead.

Bosisio, who rides for LPR Brakes, finished the 112-mile hilly leg from Vasco to Pescocostanzo in central Italy in an unofficial time of 4 hours, 45 minutes, 5 seconds after joining an early breakaway from the pack.
He pulled away on his own a few miles from the finish line.
Vasil Kiryienka of Belarus finished second, followed by Emanuele Sella of Italy.
Visconti, who rides for Quickstep, has a combined time of 32:03:01, with Matthias Russ of Germany nine seconds behind in second place. Bosisio climbed to third while defending champion Danilo Di Luca rose to fourth place after finishing fifth in Friday's stage.
The Giro continues Saturday with a 129-mile leg from Rivisondoli to Tivoli, near Rome.
