NEW YORK (Ticker) -- Kansas City Wizards goalkeeper Tony Meola, who became the first to save two penalty kicks in one game, on Monday was named Major League Soccer Player of the Week.

Meola, who was the No. 3 goalie on the United States National Team which reached the 2002 World Cup quarterfinals in Korea/Japan, stopped the 47th-minute penalty from forward Jaime Moreno. The 2000 league MVP also denied midfielder Marco Etcheverry with two minutes left as the Wizards clung to a scoreless tie at D.C. United.

The shutout marked Meola's third of the season and increased his MLS career record to 44 clean sheets.

The 33-year-old Meola, who last won the award after Week 15 of the 2000 campaign, also lowered his goals-against average this season to a league-leading 0.93.

Meola beat out fellow U.S. World Cup veteran and Los Angeles forward Cobi Jones for the weekly honor.
