SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) Carlos Ruiz scored in overtime to give the Los Angeles Galaxy a 1-0 victory over the San Jose Earthquakes on Wednesday night in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup quarterfinals.

Los Angeles, the defending cup champion, will face Dallas in the semifinals Sept. 3.

The Galaxy have eliminated the Earthquakes in three straight quarterfinals in the competition, winning 2-0 in 2000 and 10-9 on penalty kicks last year.

Ezra Hendrickson set up Ruiz's 101st-minute goal, crossing the ball from the right flank to his Guatemalan teammate. Ruiz shed U.S. World Cup defender Jeff Agoos, lifted the ball over Jimmy Conrad, collected it and blasted it past goalkeeper Jon Conway.

The Hunt Cup is the oldest annual soccer competition in the country. The tournament dates to 1914 and is open to all affiliated amateur and professional teams in the United States.

Los Angeles and San Jose are members of Major League Soccer, which has produced five of the last seven champions.
