UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) Brian McBride scored in the 34th minute and the Columbus Crew went on to a 2-1 victory over the New York/New Jersey MetroStars on Wednesday night in the quarterfinals of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.

The Hunt Cup is the oldest annual soccer competition in the country. The tournament dates to 1914 and is open to all affiliated amateur and professional teams in the United States.

Both Columbus and New York/New Jersey are members of Major League Soccer, which has produced five of the last seven Hunt Cup champions.

The Crew, playing in the tournament for the fifth time, advanced to the semifinals and will face the winner of the Aug. 24 quarterfinal between Kansas City of MLS and Milwaukee of the A-League.

McBride scored his eighth goal in the Hunt Cup on a header after taking a pass from Duncan Oughton.

The Crew took the opening kickoff of the second half and Kyle Martino made it 2-0 in the 46th minute on a pass from Jeff Cunningham.

Rodrigo Faria's penalty kick in the 49th minute spoiled Jon Busch's bid for a shutout.

Goalkeeper Tim Howard, who had started the previous 56 games for the MetroStars, was unable to play because of a lacerated big right toe. Paul Grafer made his first start since Sept. 26, 2000, when he lost in an MLS playoff game at Chicago.

New York/New Jersey was also missing forward Mamadou Diallo, the third-leading scorer in MLS, because of a lower abdominal strain.

This was the fourth meeting between the teams this year and the road team has won each time.

The Crew's best Hunt Cup finish was a second to the Chicago Fire on 1998. The MetroStars, who were also making their fifth appearance, have reached the semifinals three times, the last in 2000.
