SECAUCUS, New Jersey (Ticker) -- MetroStars midfielder-forward Clint Mathis had successful arthroscopic surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee and is expected to return by mid-August, the MLS club announced Wednesday.

The 40-minute operation was performed by Dr. Bert Mendelbaum on Wednesday in Los Angeles. The United States National Team doctor, Mendelbaum also operated on Mathis' torn right ACL in June 2001.

According to the MetroStars, Mathis' two injuries are unrelated.

Mathis, who tallied a goal and an assist for the U.S. en route to the World Cup quarterfinals in South Korea, is aiming to return for the MetroStars' home contest against the Dallas Burn on August 17.

The 25-year-old Mathis suffered his latest injury on July 6, when the Metros posted a road win over the Columbus Crew.
