CHICAGO (Ticker) -- United States Men's National Team coach Bruce Arena on Tuesday named the 18-player roster which will square off against the best of Major League Soccer in the 2002 MLS All-Star Game on August 3 at RFK Stadium in Washington D.C.

Following the success of the national team at the World Cup last month where it reached the quarterfinals, MLS players on the U.S. team will participate in the gala match rather than the traditional East vs. West Conference matchup.

Leading the contingent of players include top strikers Landon Donovan and Brian McBride, both scorers of game-winning goals for the U.S. in Korea, and Chicago Fire tandem DaMarcus Beasley and Josh Wolff.

The list selected by Arena also includes five former MLS players.

"U.S. Soccer is honored to participate in the Pepsi MLS All-Star Game," Arena said. "We are proud to acknowledge the players of MLS, who have made such great strides in establishing this league in seven short years. We are looking forward to an entertaining event and having the opportunity to thank our loyal fans."

McBride holds the distinction of being the only player in U.S. history to score a goal in two World Cups.

Also selected, were two all-time appearance leaders for the United States -- Los Angeles midfielder Cobi Jones (159) and San Jose Earthquakes defender Jeff Agoos (133). Jones has reached fourth on the all-time international list of most appearances for his country.

Kansas City Wizards goalkeeper Tony Meola, who has recorded 36 wins for the U.S. in his career, anchors the defensive end. Defender Eddie Pope represents the host D.C. United.

Veterans of the 1998 World Cup squad are Brian Maisonneuve and Alexi Lalas. Former captain John Harkes also will play. Harkes has had a remarkable 13-year career with the national team for which it was a starter for all but one of his 90 matches.

The MLS Team, which will be made up of players voted by fans, coaches, players and the media, is announced on Wednesday. The list is not limited to international players.
