COLUMBUS, Ohio (Ticker) -- The Columbus Crew signed Guatemala international midfielder Freddy Garcia on Monday. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Garcia, 25, is a regular in the Guatemalan national team. He scored five times in 10 World Cup qualifiers. But the Central American nation failed to reach the final round of qualification, losing a playoff to Costa Rica. "Freddy is a proven player at international level who knows how to both distribute the ball and put it in the back of the net," Crew coach Greg Andrulis said. "He has the ability to really sure up the left side of our formation and provide us with more attacking options." Nicknamed "La Rata," which translates as "The Rat," Garcia joined the Crew from CSD Comuncaciones, which wasted an advantage after the first leg of Guatemala's Torneo Clausura, fell to archrival CSD Municipal on June 18, 2-0, and lost the championship, 3-2 on aggregate.
