NEW YORK (Ticker) -- Forward Josh Wolff, who scored twice and set up the "Golden Goal" in the Chicago Fire's 3-2 road triumph over the MetroStars, was named Major League Soccer Player of the Week on Monday.

Wolff, who played a key role in the U.S. national team's round-of-16 victory over Mexico at last month's World Cup, earned Player of the Week honors for the first time since 1998, his rookie season.

He also became the third member of the Fire to receive the accolade this season, joining midfielder Peter Nowak and forward Ante Razov.

In Saturday's battle of the top two teams in the Eastern Conference, Wolff centered the ball into the path of an onrushing DaMarcus Beasley six minutes into overtime. The midfielder's one-timer found the back of the net and gave the Fire their fourth win in six all-time games at Giants Stadium.

The Fire were trailing, 1-0, when Wolff struck twice during a three-minute span. He pinpointed a 30-yard free kick into the top corner of the net and knotted the contest eight minutes into the second half.

In the 55th minute, the 25-year-old Wolff beat a pair of defenders to the ball and slotted the ball past goalkeeper Tim Howard from six yards out.

Wolff beat out Columbus forward Brian McBride and Kansas City midfielder Chris Klein for the honor.
