This powerful wide-bodied fullback completed a fine career in the ACC primarily as a lead blocker. Dyer is a massive back who gets tremendous leg drive as a runner to move the chains. He runs with excellent body lean and the power to carry defenders for extra yardage. He has been a physical tough blocker over his career and instrumental in several Tar Heel runners' big performances.
He is quick to the hole both as a runner and blocker and takes on the defender head on. He is a mainly a straight-line runner, with quickness and power but is dangerous if a club fails to focus on him at times during the game. He fits the ideal complimentary fullback role, with his prime responsibility as a lead blocker. He gets into an opponent quickly with the power to maul at the point of attack. He will take out a defender's legs often and is especially effective on the edge against the outside linebacker.
As a senior, he ran for 233 yards on 73 carries and 2 TDs with 7 receptions for 55 yards and 1 TD. He has developed good receiving skills over his career, displaying sure hands with the ball security to make yardage as a runner when used as an outlet receiver. He caught only 20 passes over his career but he played in an offense that lacked a pro style passer.
At Senior Bowl practices he showed reliable hands, with quickness into his routes and the ability to get open. He also took on all pass rushers in blitz situations and came through with flying colors. He has very aggressive and physical and went head to head with some of this year's blue chip linebackers and stopped them in their tracks. He uses fine technique and positioning, which combined, with his strong frame and toughness allows him to carry out blocking assignments flawlessly. When he lowers his pads, he can be a punishing runner who delivers the hit to defenders.
He lacks moves in the open field and relies on his power to make yardage. He has all the physical skills to be the best complimentary fullback prospect in this class. He has all the physical tools to become one of the better blocking fullbacks, as a pro and is similar to former Tar Heel William Henderson in size and ability.
He has been a very tough special teams performer earlier in his career with a linebacker mentality defending kicks. He will be able to help immediately in that role as a rookie while he learns his offensive assignments. He has definite early NFL starting ability and possibly as a rookie. Though he could slip to the middle rounds, he has the tools to be a fine pro and one of the best blocking fullbacks in recent years. Warrior with the physical skills and toughness desired in a lead blocker.
