Time to get those bowl tickets -- here's the (projected) matchups

OK, so there's a lot of football left to be played before the bowl invitations go out.

Actually, all of the football is left to be played before the bowl invitations go out.

But that doesn't mean we don't have a few clues about who will be playing who come the postseason.

We're not following "official SportsLine.com" predictions (that dart had become too dull and had to be retired), but projecting all of the factors that go into the bowls' team selection. Standings, fan following, TV ratings, geography, who the board members like to play golf with ... you know, all that stuff.

Rose Jan. 3
Pasadena
Matchup: BCS #1 vs. BCS #2
Projection: Florida vs. Oregon
SEC champions invade the Rose Bowl, with "home team" Pac-10 waiting. Gators and Ducks have the best combination of big-play talent, coaching and schedule to get here.
Orange Jan. 2
Miami
Matchup: *ACC/*Big East vs. At-large
Projection: Miami vs. Oklahoma
Great pairing of Big East champion and Big 12 South Division runner-up.
Fiesta Jan. 1

Matchup: Big 12* vs. Pac-10*
Projection: Texas vs. Northwestern
With Oregon going to the Rose Bowl, Pac-10 spot opens up -- and Big Ten champ hops in.

General notes
-Sunshine Football Classic (formerly Micronpc.com Bowl) and the Jeep San Francisco (formerly Aloha Bowl) are unsettled, and at this point look like they will be non-starters for the 2001 season.
-Some conference order of picks are arranged by geography and other factors, not strictly by picking order, or by standings.
