Race 12 of 37 on Winston Cup circuit

TV: FX, 7:30 p.m. ET

The Track -- a 1.5-mile tri-oval with 24-degree banking

Distance -- 70 laps/105 miles (run in 3 segments of 30 laps, 30 laps and 10 laps)

The Winston -- This non-points event features winners from previous years in an "all-star" race worth $2 million with the winner receiving minimum of $500,000. The eligibility requirements were changed in 1997 to make the race a winners-only event. The field will consist of 20 drivers but the practice of filling out the field from the Winston Open in past seasons has been replaced by filling out the field from race winners from past seasons.

The field will consist of 20 drivers from the following categories:

2000 winners (13) -- Dale Jarrett, Bobby Labonte, Jeff Burton, Ward Burton, Rusty Wallace, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Mark Martin, Jeff Gordon, Jeremy Mayfield, Matt Kenseth, Tony Stewart, Steve Park, Jerry Nadeau

2001 winners (4) -- Michael Waltrip, Kevin Harvick, Elliott Sadler, Bobby Hamilton

Bill Elliott (1988 Winston Cup champion)
Terry Labonte (1984, 1996 Winston Cup champion)
Winston Open winner
No Bull Sprint winner

The Winston Open -- Is a 50-lap qualifying race for The Winston, made up from the finishing order of the two No Bull 25s held Friday night. This race will be lined up according to their finish in the No Bull 25s with the finishers from the first No Bull 25 lining up on the inside and the finishers from the second No Bull 25 lining up on the outside. The race is run on the same evening prior to The Winston. The Winston Open winner will start last in The Winston.

The No Bull 25s -- To be run on Friday night, May 18, it will set the field for this year's Winston Open. Only drivers not eligible for The Winston will compete in these qualifiers. The starting fields for each of the No Bull 25s will be set based on the afternoon's practice speeds. The drivers will line up for the first No Bull 25 according to their speeds with the first, third, fifth, etc. fastest driver making up the starting lineup. The second No Bull 25 will align the second, fourth, sixth, etc. fastest drivers.

The Event -- The Winston consists of a three-segment format totaling 70 laps. Qualifying for the 19 eligible drivers in The Winston involves a three-lap qualifying run with a two-tire mandatory pit stop at either the end of the first or second lap. The fastest overall time earns the pole for the first 30-lap race.

The first and second segments are 30 laps each, followed by a final 10-lap shootout. Only green-flag laps count in all three segments. Drivers who are lapped by the caution car while on pit road will be scored a lap down. In years past, the field was inverted for the second segment. Under the new rules, a maximum of 12 cars and a minimum of three cars will be inverted for the second segment. This will be determined during the break between the first and second segment. At the end of the second segment, teams will have the option to pit for tires, fuel and adjustments but will fall into lines as the cars are running on the race track. Those drivers who remain on the track will maintain their positions after the second segment or advance if a driver in front of them chooses to pit.

DRIVERS

Jeff Burton -- After not finishing higher than 18th in the first seven races, he put together a pair of top-10s highlighted by a third-place at the Virginia 500; is a lowly 25th in the points; eligible for the event by way of last year win at Las Vegas.

Ward Burton -- Slightly better than his brother Jeff in 19th place of the Winston Cup standings; fifth in the Food City 500 is best effort in 11 races this season; competes in the race as 2000 winner at Darlington.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. -- Defending champion of The Winston; was the first rookie to win NASCAR's All-Star event; had a rough time in the five races following his father's death at the Daytona 500 in February; seems to have recovered somewhat with four top-eight finishes in the last five races; up to 10th in the standings after a low 26th earlier in the year.

Bill Elliott -- Part of the field as 1998 Winston Cup champion; top finish of 2001 was fifth in the Daytona 500 after starting from pole; won The Winston in its second year of existence in 1986.

Jeff Gordon -- Finished in the top five in seven of 11 races this year including victory in Las Vegas and three second-place finishes (the last two races); narrowed the lead of Dale Jarrett to 14 points in the Winston Cup standings; winner of The Winston in 1995 and 1997.

Bobby Hamilton -- Is one of nine different winners this year; won the Talladega 500 to be part of The Winston event; was his fourth career win; stands ninth in the points.

Kevin Harvick -- The 25-year-old rookie is eligible for the event due to his victory at Atlanta in March; is Dale Earnhardt's replacement at Richard Childress Racing; his first career victory came in just his third start.

Dale Jarrett -- Posted three victories this year, but had his lead in the standings reduced to just 14 points by Jeff Gordon; the 1999 Winston Cup champion never won The Winston, but came in second to Dale Earnhardt Jr. last year.

Matt Kenseth -- Anxious to return to Lowe's Motor Speedway. the site of his first career Winston Cup victory; won the Coca Cola 600 last year, which is how is part of the all-star field; in last year's Winston Open, the Dewalt Team started 17th and finished 14th; they finished fourth in the "No Bull Sprint".

Bobby Labonte -- A year ago, he began a run at The Winston which developed into a hot momentum to the Winston Cup championship; in 14 races from The Winston to Richmond, Labonte won two events and had an average finish of sixth; this year has been anything but disappointing and he hopes to recapture the success had here last year when he finished 3rd; won The Winston in 1999, had finishes of second in 1998 and 1997.

Terry Labonte -- Has one top five and two top-10s in 11 races, good for 22nd place in the points standings; available for the race as past Winston Cup champion in 1996 and 1984; won this event in 1988 and again in 1999.

Mark Martin -- The 1998 Winston winner is competing following last year's win at Martinsville; having a disappointing season by his standards; fourth place in the Talladega 500 was one of just three top-10s; seven other finishes were 20th or lower.

Jeremy Mayfield -- Despite three top-five finishes, he is a lowly 24th in the Winston Cup standings; seven other finishes are 22nd or lower; in The Winston by way of his 2000 victory at California.

Jerry Nadeau -- This year, he is in the "big show" by way of his victory last year at Atlanta; last year he had to race his way into The Winston by winning the No Bull Sprint; that earned him the final starting spot in the all-star event, but Nadeau quickly moved his way through the front and finished fourth.

Steve Park -- Solid year with six top-10s, four of which were finishes in the first five; also captured win at Dura Lube 400 at North Carolina Speedway; competes in The Winston by way of his 2000 victory at Watkins Glen, New York.

Tony Stewart -- Has been red hot the last four races after a rather poor start; had just one fourth place finish in the first seven races; has finished in the top seven including coming off a win at Richmond in the last four straight races; climbed from ninth to seventh in the Winston Cup standings.

Elliott Sadler -- Won the Food City 5000 at Bristol, TN on March 25 after starting 38th; it was the deepest in the field any driver has won at short-track; that win gives him the privilege to run in The Winston.

Rusty Wallace -- Won this event in 1989 on his way to the Winston Cup championship; has six top-10 finishes this year including career win 54, which ties him for seventh with Lee Petty; up to third place in the series table, 62 points behind Dale Jarrett.

Michael Waltrip -- Took the checkered flag at this event in 1996; one of the most likeable characters on the circuit was always termed as a perennial looser; but that tag was ended in the opening race of the year and biggest, the Daytona 500 when he won his first career Winston Cup race (it took him 463 races to win his first); that win, however, was marred by the last lap crash which caused the death of friend and car owner Dale Earnhardt.
