A glance at 2001

Head coach Reggie Witherspoon, who had his interim tag removed in March, has sparked some optimism in Buffalo.

The perenially bad Bulls tripled their MAC win total last season, going from 0-19 to 3-16. Granted, three wins isn't exactly cause to break open the bottle of Moet, but for Buffalo it's progress.

The coach

When Tim Cohane resigned just a month into the season, Witherspoon was called on to pick up the pieces. Athletic director Bob Arkeilpane was impressed with Witherspoon, and offered him a multi-year contract after the season.

Witherspoon has a big recruiting class coming in, including a pair of bruising junior college transfers.

Key newcomers

F Robert Brown (6-4, 200): Played a year at Central Michigan before transferring to Schoolcraft Junior College. He received NJCAA All-America honorable mention honors last season.

F Carlos Gill (6-7, 220): Junior college transfer who played with Mateen Cleaves at Flint Northern High School.

C Kevin Swoffer (6-10, 250): Transfer from McCook Junior College in Nebraska. Averaged 10 points and eight boards last season.
