Round 1 Cardinal outclasses 16th seed W 84-65

SportsLine.com report
March 17, 2000

A Glance at 2001

Some big losses to graduation could hurt, including the departures of Mike Wiatre and Duane Johnson, the leaders of the outside and inside attacks.

Eight players return, led by forwards James Jones and Coray Davis, who need to take their scoring up a notch. Omar Vanderhorst looks like an up-and-comer in the backcourt. Someone needs to fill in for Johnson down low.

The Coach

Cy Alexander is the perfect fit in Orangeburg. He is too old to be considered a climber. Yet too young to think about hanging them up. He's built a fine program and keeps winning. There's no reason to think it will stop anytime soon.

Who'll Be Back

James Jones is the team's second leading scorer at 11.9 points a game and expect him to increase that total with the graduation of leading scorer Mike Wiatre.

Coray Davis is the team's fourth leading scorer at 8.2, and like Jones, needs to step up the scoring. Omar Vanderhorst should take over at point guard, and 6-1 guard John Shivers has experience after averaging 5.2 points a game this season.

Who's Gone

Mike Wiatre, the team's leading scorer who hit for 16 points a game and a few clutch shots this season. He will be nearly impossible to replace.

Duane Johnson, at 6-11, leaves a big physical void in the post as well as his 9.2 points and 6.4 rebounds which will no longer be around. Coray Davis, a solid 6-5 swingman and the team's fourth-leading scorer, also departs.

Arthur Carlisle is a steady 6-5 forward who will be missed.
