In his first year at Northwestern, coach Mike McConathy came within one game of making the NCAA Tournament. The Demons made the finals of the Southland Conference tourney before dropping a seven-point decision to Lamar for the right to go to the Big Dance.

The 17-12 season was a remarkable success for McConathy, who returns two key players in guard Allan Polk and forward Chris Thompson.
