A glance at 2001

Oklahoma State will be a total unknown in 2001. The Cowboys lose seven seniors, six of whom get the majority of playing time in 2000.

Fredrik Jonzen returns, along with Andre Williams and Jason Keep, giving the Pokes potential up front. Antoine Broxsie (6-10) is redshirting.

Oklahoma State hopes that Illinois State transfer Victor Williams (5-10) will be the answer at the point. Daniel Lawson (6-6) will be available after redshirting. He's a transfer from Mott Community College in Michigan.

The Cowboys have signed one of the top recruiting classes in the country, led by the top-rated player in Oklahoma -- 6-4 Charles Crawford of Bishop McGinnis.

The coach

Eddie Sutton just keeps on winning at Oklahoma State and there's no reason to think he'll stop any time soon.

Who'll be back

None of the key components from this year, though the Cowboys do have some highly touted guys who spent most of the year sitting on the bench. Williams is a potential all-conference stallion and Keep, one of the gems of Sutton's recruiting class out of North Idaho College, is a nimble wide-body with a soft touch.

Who's gone

Just about anybody who contributed heavily to the team's success this year. That includes Brian Montonati, Desmond Mason, Doug Gottlieb and Joe Adkins. So, all Sutton needs to come up with is a point guard to replace one of the nation's best play makers (Gottlieb), a selfless paint presence (Montonati) and a pair of snipers capable of taking games over (Mason and Adkins).

Key newcomers

With so many seniors leaving the program, Sutton brought in a full boat of recruits:

  • David Anderson (6-7, 200, F): Perhaps the best athlete in the class, Anderson won the slam dunk championship at the NBA Players Association Camp last season and will play for the Puerto Rican national team this summer.
  • Terrance Crawford (6-6, 205, F): Considered the top prep prospect in Oklahoma, he led McGuinness High (Oklahoma City) to two straight state titles, averaging 18 points, 10 rebounds and 4.7 assists as a junior.
  • Bernard Kidd (6-5, 190, G): An outstanding leaper, considered one of the best shooting guards in Texas.
  • Jack Marlow (6-11, 285, C): Has been committed to the Cowboys since his junior year in high school. Considered a project, he will have time to develop behind Keep.
  • Ivan McFarlin (6-7, 210, F): An athletic swing who Sutton expects to contribute immediately on defense thanks to his arm length and jumping ability.
