Champions League: Roma needs point against Valencia to advance

ROME (AP) -AS Roma needs only one point against injury-depleted Valencia to advance to the second round of the Champions League, and the Italian team will have to do it without Francesco Totti.

The Roma captain was ruled out of Tuesday's Group D game with an ankle injury.

With 13 points, Valencia has already won the group. Roma is next with seven points, followed by Shakhtar Donetsk with five and Olympiakos with two.

If Roma loses, it will have to hope that Shakhtar doesn't beat Olympiakos in the other group game.

Totti scored two penalties to lead Roma to a 2-1 comeback win over Atalanta on Saturday, but was diagnosed with an injury Monday.

"He has pain in his ankle, but he could recuperate for the derby," coach Luciano Spalletti said, referring to Roma's league game with city rival Lazio on Sunday.

In midfield, David Pizarro is suspended and Simone Perrotta is questionable with a swollen ankle.

Roma lost 1-0 to Shakhtar in its last Champions League game.

Valencia lost to Recreativo Huelva 2-0 in the Spanish league Saturday and trails leader FC Barcelona by 12 points.

Valencia's injury list is one player short of a full team. The list includes: Mario Regueiro, Fernando Morientes, David Villa, Miguel Brito, David Albelda, Edu Gaspar, Emiliano Moretti, Asier del Horno, Carlos Marchena and Jaime Gavilan.

"This is a strange situation for us, but we have to take it on board with each one of us contributing his bit to begin to turn this situation round," Spain midfielder Ruben Baraja said.

David Silva, Aaron Niguez and Francesco Tavano are Valencia's forwards for the game.
