Joe Public FC beats New England Revolution 4-0

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) -Gregory Richardson scored three goals and set up another as Trinidad and Tobago's Joe Public scored a 4-0 victory over Major League Soccer's the New England Revolution on Tuesday in a CONCACAF Champions League preliminary round series.

Joe Public won the two-match aggregate goal series by a 6-1 margin after beating New England 2-1 on Aug. 26. They became the first Caribbean club to score three goals or more in a single match in CONCACAF competition against an American club, and the first Caribbean club to eliminate a U.S. entry.

The Revolution was without five key offensive players because of injuries: Taylor Twellman, Steve Ralston, Adam Cristman, Kheli Dube and Kenny Mansally.

Richardson scored first-half goals at 17 and 45, netted his third goal with a left-footed drive at 81 and set up Roen Nelson's drive atop the penalty box area in the 48th minute.

Mauricio Castro and Shalrie Joseph missed opportunities to score for New England.

Joe Public advances to the quarterfinal round of the Champions League series' Group C with Mexico's Atlante, Olimpia of Honduras and the winner of the Montreal-Real Esteli series.

The eight preliminary round winners advance to the 16-team group stage of the tournament, which replaced the CONCACAF Champions Cup. MLS's Houston Dynamo and D.C. United received automatic berths in the group stage, which opens Sept. 16.
