COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -A Josh Wolff second-half goal saw Kansas City draw 3-3 away at Columbus in Major League Soccer on Thursday to frustrate the Crew's hopes of pulling closer to the Eastern Conference lead.
A wild spell in the first half saw five goals scored in just 16 minutes, with Columbus rallying from two goals down to claim a 3-2 lead at halftime.
Had the Crew been able to maitain that lead, it would have moved within three points of the Eastern Conference leader New England, but Wolff's goal meant it remained five points behind the Revolution.
"A lot of teams don't find a way to come back, and we were the better team in the second half," said Kansas City coach Curt Onalfo. "We'll build on that."
Kansas City went ahead in the 22nd minute when Columbus captain and veteran U.S. international Frankie Hejduk put the ball into his own net whilst trying to clear a cross.
The Wizards went two up just two minutes later Jack Jewsbury crossed for Honduran midfielder Roger Espinoza to hit home a blistering shot.
The home team hit back quickly. Again after only a two-minute wait, Columbus drew a goal back when veteran Argentine forward Guillermo Barros Schelotto curled home a 25-yard freekick.
Schelotto was instrumental in the 33rd minute equalizer. He latched onto a pass to get behind the defense and laid off to Venezuelan forward Alejandro Moreno, whose shot just crossed the goal line.
The Crew completed their comeback in the 38th minute, when Schelotto's corner was headed home by center back Chad Marshall.
"For the first 15, 20 minutes we carried the game," said Columbus coach Sigi Schmid. "We shouldn't have been down, based on how we played in the first half. ... But if you score three goals, you should win the game."
Wolff's 75th minute equalizer meant the Wizards had gone five games without defeat, steadying after a poor start to the season.
