Midfielder Beasley back on U.S. roster

CHICAGO -- Midfielder DaMarcus Beasley, sidelined by a knee injury since November, was among 33 players on a preliminary roster announced Thursday for upcoming U.S. exhibition games.

A veteran of two World Cups, Beasley returned to training last month after surgery to repair his right knee, injured while he was playing for Scotland's Glasgow Rangers in a European Champions League match on Nov. 27.

Forwards Landon Donovan, Clint Dempsey, Eddie Johnson, Freddy Adu and Jozy Altidore were selected along with goalkeeper Tim Howard.

Goalkeepers Kasey Keller and Marcus Hahnemann were not picked. Also among the missing is midfielder Bobby Convey, who had a knee injury and played just twice for Reading during the final 3 1/2 months of the English Premier League season.

The United States plays at England (May 28) and at Spain (June 4), then faces Argentina at East Rutherford, N.J. (June 8). Different 22-man rosters likely will be selected for each game, team spokesman Michael Kammarman said.

After the exhibitions, the U.S. opens World Cup qualifying on June 15 against Barbados at Carson, Calif., then plays at the Caribbean nation June 22.
