Titans don't say much on Young
Vince Young, QB TEN
News: Vince Young had his right hand taped as he left the Tennessee Titans' offices Friday. His head coach isn't talking much about the injury, now that the season opener is so close. Young bruised his throwing hand in the first half of Thursday night's 23-21 preseason finale win over Green Bay, and he didn't return for the first series of the third quarter as originally planned. But Young had thrown 27 passes, completing 13 for 134 yards without an interception. Asked if the Titans planned to X-ray or run other tests on Young's right hand, coach Jeff Fisher said only that the quarterback was doing well. "We'll have a full injury report for you (next) Friday," Fisher said. "He'll be designated as whether he practiced or did not practice. At this point, I would expect he would practice."
Analysis: Fisher said he felt good about Young's performance against the Packers, particularly the quarterback's three runs for 57 yards. Young also had his longest completion of the preseason -- a 50-yarder to Justin McCareins. The Titans' first-team offense made four trips inside the Green Bay 20 in the first half -- including three inside the 10 -- but couldn't avoid finishing the preseason without a touchdown. The Titans settled for four field-goal attempts, missing one. Young might be an athletic QB, but he heads into 2008 as a No. 2 Fantasy QB because his career numbers just aren't that impressive. His status for Week 1 against the Jaguars is a bit questionable, but it doesn't appear as though there is much for Fantasy owners to worry about at this time. Profile
Manning expects to face Bears
Peyton Manning, QB IND
News: Peyton Manning expects to be in the starting lineup when the Indianapolis Colts open the season against the Chicago Bears. The Colts quarterback, who underwent knee surgery in July, was activated Tuesday and went through a pregame workout with the team before the final preseason game Thursday night. He and the rest of the team went through a short practice Friday before coach Tony Dungy sent them home for the weekend. "I don't really want to get into daily progress reports of how it went. But it was something that we decided to do last week," Manning said of his increased workload in practice. "We're going to just keep progressing this weekend and going through next week. And hopefully we can just keep feeling better."
Analysis: Manning said he felt fine after the pregame routine Thursday night. "It was good to get back there, doing the same things the rest of the guys were doing. Having to do rehab, having to miss practice, it's not really the situation that you want to be in," Manning said. "So it was good to get back out there, get in uniform, be around the guys. And hopefully that can be the sort of the norm from here on out." The Colts, 1-4 in the preseason, open against the Bears on Sept. 7 in the new Lucas Oil Stadium. It appears safe to onsider Manning a nice start for Week 1 unless you hear otherwise. He is still among the best quarterbacks in football and a No. 1 Fantasy QB. Profile
Brown might not make Texans cut
Chris Brown, RB HOU
News: The Texans have one more cut to make and is evaluating running back Chris Brown to see if he is healthy enough to contribute this season. Brown, who was signed this offseason, has been struggling with back problems since the start of training camp.
Analysis: Texans starting RB Ahman Green hasn't seen much playing time in the preseason either because of a groin injury, but he is expected to be fine Week 1 and a big contributor in 2008 as long as he is healthy. The Texans want Brown on their roster, but they can't afford to have him hurt all the time. If he survives the cut, Brown remains nothing more than a low-end Fantasy RB as a backup. Profile
Rudi on the way out in Cincy?
Rudi Johnson, RB CIN
News: Speculation is high after Rudi Johnson's failure to get on the field in the club's preseason finale on Thursday that the veteran running back could either be traded out of town or released. The Cincinnati Enquirer was the first to suggest such a thing, citing that the club seems comfortable going with a rotation of Chris Perry, Kenny Watson and DeDe Dorsey at running back.
Analysis: Not surprisingly, Johnson has taken a major slide in Fantasy drafts, going as late as the middle rounds to an owner who can't pass up on his potential. But what might that potential be? It's not like there are a number of starting RB jobs open outside of Cincinnati. For now, treat Johnson as a reserve Fantasy RB, worth the value of a middle-round pick. If he stays in Cincinnati, then he should have a chance to play. If he moves on, then at least a club wants to utilize him somehow. Sadly, his days of rushing for 12 touchdowns and over 1,000 yards seem over. Profile
Rolle starts at free safety Fri.
Antrel Rolle, CB ARI
News: Cardinals DB Antrel Rolle (foot) started at free safety for Friday's preseason finale against the Broncos. He had two tackles (one solo) and finished the preseason with four tackles.
Analysis: Rolle escaped a serious ankle injury and it appears as though he will line up Week 1 against the 49ers as the Cardinals' starting free safety. Rolle had 62 tackles and a career-high five interceptions in 2007. He also scored three touchdowns. Rolle is a decent low-end Fantasy DB when healthy. Profile
Patrick a DNP vs. Broncos
Ben Patrick, TE ARI
News: Cardinals TE Ben Patrick (ankle) missed Friday's preseason finale against the Broncos. He missed the last two games and had just two catches for 22 yards in the preseason.
Analysis: Although Patrick has some sleeper potential, he won't be a reliable Fantasy option as long as Leonard Pope is in front of him on the depth chart. Continue to ignore him in Fantasy. Profile
Dykes ends preseason with 3 tackles
Keilen Dykes, DT ARI
News: Cardinals DL Keilen Dykes had one tackle in Friday's preseason finale against the Broncos. He had three tackles in the preseason.
Analysis: The rookie out of West Virginia got off to a slow start in training camp because of an undisclosed ailment. He might not survive the last cut and can be ignored in Fantasy. Profile
Mustard starts on Friday
Chad Mustard, TE DEN
News: Broncos TE Chad Mustard started Friday's preseason game against the Cardinals. He had one catch for 16 yards.
Analysis: Mustard began the preseason on the PUP list with a hamstring injury and might not even survive the 53-man cuts. It's safe to ignore him in Fantasy. Profile
Manuel active, doesn't play
Marquand Manuel, DB DEN
News: Broncos DB Marquand Manuel (thumb) was listed as a substitute for Friday's preseason finale against the Cardinals, but did not see any game action. Manuel, who has surgery for a broken thumb, finished the preseason with six tackles.
Analysis: Manuel is expected to wear a cast to protect his thumb, but should be ready for the season opener against the Raiders. The Broncos are Manuel's fifth team. He played for Carolina last season and has also played for Green Bay, Seattle and Cincinnati, which chose him in the sixth round of the 2002 draft out of Florida. Manuel had 18 tackles, one sack and one interception last season with Carolina. Manuel used to be a solid Fantasy DB, but something happened since the 2006 season. Until he regains his form, ignore him in IDP leagues. Profile
Dumervil listed as substitute
Elvis Dumervil, DE DEN
News: Broncos DL Elvis Dumervil (finger) was listed as a substitute for Friday's preseason finale against the Cardinals, but did not appear in the game. He had four tackles and two sacks in the preseason.
Analysis: Dumervil suffered a dislocated finger during the third preseason game against the Packers, but it's not an injury that is expected to sideline him to open the season. Dumervil played well in his second season in 2007. He led the Broncos with 12.5 sacks and also added 39 tackles (34 solo), one interception and four forced fumbles. Dumervil now has 21 sacks in his first two years in the NFL. Consider Dumervil a viable Fantasy DL when healthy. Profile
Carrington shakes off calf injury
Paul Carrington, DE DEN
News: Broncos DL Paul Carrington (calf) was able to play in Friday's preseason finale against the Cardinals. He had one tackle and one forced fumble. He had six tackles (five solo) in the preseason.
Analysis: It appears as though Carrington's injury wasn't serious, but he is nothing more than a backup DL anyway. It's still safe to ignore him in Fantasy. Profile
Bailey's status still in question
Boss Bailey, LB DEN
News: Broncos LB Boss Bailey (ankle) missed Friday's preseason finale against the Cardinals. He has missed the last two games since injuring his ankle and is questionable for Week 1 against the Raiders.
Analysis: The Broncos continue to hope that Bailey will be active for the season opener, but his injury is coming along slowly. When healthy, Bailey is more of a low-end Fantasy LB. Profile
Graham active, but doesn't play
Daniel Graham, TE DEN
News: Broncos TE Daniel Graham (hamstring) was active for Friday's preseason game against the Cardinals, but did not see any action. Graham had one catch for seven yards in the preseason.
Analysis: Graham is nothing more than a reserve tight end for the Broncos and likely will see very few passes come his way in 2008. It's safe to ignore him in Fantasy until further notice. Profile
Ekuban held out vs. Cardinals
Ebenezer Ekuban, DE DEN
News: Broncos DL Ebenezer Ekuban (back) missed Friday's preseason finale against the Cardinals. He finished the preseason with four tackles (three solo).
Analysis: Ekuban hasn't played since 2006 because of injury and it's not good to see him battling another problem early in the year. It's safe to ignore him in Fantasy until further notice. Profile
Alridge rushes for 110 yards
Anthony Alridge, RB DEN
News: Broncos RB Anthony Alridge (hamstring) was able to play in Friday's preseason finale against the Cardinals. He led the team with 23 carries for 110 yards. He also had two receptions for 13 yards after missing the last two games.
Analysis: Alridge made a great case to crack the Broncos' roster with a strong performance against the Cardinals, but he is not expected to see a significant amout of carries to start the season. It's safe to ignore him in Fantasy. Profile
Payne might survive 'Hawks cuts
Logan Payne, WR SEA
News: The depleted Seattle Seahawks' receiving corps took another hit Friday night when Ben Obomanu broke his clavicle early in Seattle's 23-16 preseason victory over the Oakland Raiders. Obomanu was injured midway through the first quarter after making a 33-yard catch over the middle, landing hard on his shoulder. Coach Mike Holmgren revealed the injury after the game. "That's a tough one, certainly," Holmgren said. "I feel bad for him. He was very much in our plans." Asked if Obomanu may be placed on injured reserve, Holmgren said, "It's a possibility." Should Obomanu be placed on injured reserve, the move would open an additional roster spot for the likes of rookie Michael Bumpus or Logan Payne, both of whom appeared to be borderline to make the 53-man roster before Obomanu's injury. "It's just an unusual situation with the numbers at wide receiver with all the injuries," Holmgren said.
Analysis: Payne had three catches for 34 yards Friday. He finished the preseason with eight catches for 82 yards. Payne is a second-year player out of Minnesota. If he makes the squad, he will be nothing more than roster depth. It's safe to ignore him in Fantasy. Profile
