First look at USC-Ohio State

Posted on: September 6, 2008 5:52 pm

It's looking more and more like the most important player for Ohio State headed into USC isn't Beanie Wells. It's Terrelle Pryor.

Either Jim Tressel was trying sneak Pryor through Ohio without giving the Trojans a good look or the kid was somehow hurt. And trust me, he wasn't hurt. In two quiet series, Pryor rushed five times for 37 yards (zero for two passing).

It's not like the Buckeyes couldn't have used him. Todd Boeckman struggled mightily at times either finding his recievers or getting his feet set behind a sometimes shaky offensive line. Boeckman also had several passes dropped. In the end, he did not look like a quarterback ready to go into the Coliseum and beat the Trojans.

Tailbacks Brandon Saine, Maurice Wells and Dan Herron are nice guys and OK runners, but they're not ready to punk the Trojans either. That brings us back to Pryor. He is the X factor next week. There's no doubt Tressel needs Wells to be healthy and play well, but conventional weapons might be useless against this USC defense. Boeckman is a stationary target.

Paul Johnson might have found a quarterback and the ACC might have found a favorite. Georgia Tech's 19-16 victory at Boston College was one of the more impressive of the day. Yellow Jackets Josh Nesbitt, while not the perfect option quarterback (123 yards total offense), looks like he is going to be at least serviceable. Nesbitt was clutch in the fourth quarter rallying Tech from a 16-10 deficit.

Dennis,

I don't think Pryor is going to see much action at USC.  Tressel gave him one early series, and then sat him until the game was put away--which turned out to be later than we all expected.  His numbers were decent, but that Ohio D was pretty worn down by the time Pryor got into the game for his second series.  He is a great talent, no doubt.  Tressel will have some plays for him, no doubt.  Tressel is going to trust Beockman to lead the offense, no doubt.

First look at USC-Ohio State

Ohio State looked like the same team that played LSU and Florida. If the media considers them great on defense and offense and a deep team they better revisit the statistics of this game. How many turnovers do you need to beat a team who matches you in stats at home. It is time the Media faced the fact that this game(USC and OHIO STATE) is not the big game of the year. Your media can try but this team is not a top ten team in offense or defense outside the Big 10.

Now Oklahoma easily should jump Ohio State playing Cinn. not Ohio U.  What did the pollsters say about USC balanced attack against Virginia?  Georgia did what with everyone LEAVING AGAIN in the third quarter with the injuries they have had? ECA did what to West Virginia. THANK YOU MAY FOR YOUR HONEST COMMENTS ON OHIO STATE!!!

Stop!!! Ranking these teams who play no one and lose games to underdogs at home or play terrible. THAT IS THREE OUT OF THE LAST FOUR FOR OHIO STATE(LSU, ILLINOIS AND OHIO U.). WAKE UP AMERICA AND QUIT GIVING PATTY CAKE ALL AMERICAN HONORS TO OHIO STATE LB'S AND QB'S.

WHY ARE THEY RANKED?   HOW FAR WILL THEY DROP AFTER THIS POOR PEFORMANCE? NOT FAR IF TV WANTS THE RATINGS!!!

How come CBSSPORTSLINE missed the story on the suspended Penn State Football players? If made ESPN, Fox Sports, and other web pages. Must have been another oversight of having your writers blog crap rather then report real news.

You must not have been looking.  They ran the story about those players.  Maybe it was just buried by the time you looked for it.  I know its not about the story though.  You were really just looking for a chance to sling an insult somewhere.  So good job with that.

WHY ARE THEY RANKED?

Check next years NFL draft for the answer to that question.  When will posters figure out that their posts lose all credibility when they rant like drunks at the sports bar? That is a better question to ask.

Hey LSU fans-Georgia dude is saying you beat nobody for the NC.  You beat a team that should not even be ranked!!  Maybe he thinks Georgia was the team to beat, or was it USC?  Too bad both those teams lost games they should have won and were unavailable for the National Championship.  I mean come on, Wisconsin gave Tennessee a fight at least.  Stanford?  South Carolina?  Why were USC and Georgia even ranked? (See, looks stupid when I say that)

Dodd you are dead on!

Tressel needs to break out the West Va, Oregon, Illinois, East Carolina, EVEN VANDY tape and figure out HOW TO USE PRYOR properly to WIN...

If he did that, it would even HELP those marginal running backs as well!  Also HELP the marginal receivers get OPEN by buying them that extra split second  they need while the defense is thinking where the ball is going...

Conventional methods will NOT beat the Trojans next week.  I'm Buckeye, but its easy to see that they are NOT going to win that way.

19 players back for the Buckeyes - yup the same 19 that LOST the last 2 championship games and to Illinois down the stretch.  I'm NOT IMPRESSED WITH THOSE 19 at all!

In fact, I'll take a NEW 19 starting with Pryor.

Has TRESSEL ALREADY FORGOTTEN HIS LOSS TO TEXAS WHEN HE TRIED TO FORCE JUSTIN ZWICK DOWN OUR THROATS WHEN TROY SMITH SHOULD HAVE GOTTEN THE BULK OF THE PLAYING TIME?

Gotta put the best players on the field - Period...

I hope they do play Prior against SC. SC's defense will be pumped to take this true freshman kid out! All he did was keep the rock and run with it against a defense that isn't all that. I bet  Rey Maualuga and  Brian Cushing would love that!

sinatra324 - you are exactly right!  Football is not simple math.  Each game is its own entity.

I can't believe people are asking why OSU is ranked...  Every team throws up a stinker every so often, at least they won...  They played horrible, maybe it was the loss of Wells, maybe they were looking ahead, maybe Tressel was trying to not give away something, maybe they just aren't a good football team, we don't know right now...

I don't understand the hatred towards OSU, East Carolina beats Virginia Tech and West Virginia and everyone talks about how great ECU, not how bad those teams are...  But Ohio State struggles but beats a team and its a sign they're not even top 25 caliber?  What happens if OSU goes to Cali next week and beats the Trojans?  Then is Ohio State good or are you going to just start talking about how overrated USC is?  I'm guessing the latter...
