This is why I can't watch

Posted on: August 16, 2008 1:23 pm

Remember what I wrote earlier this week? I said I'm not watching the Olympics. This is another example why:

Tonight in prime time, NBC will show the 100-meter sprint finals. Pound-for-pound, second-for-second, it's the greatest -- the most dramatic -- event in sports.

And I already know who won.

All of us do. Usain Bolt won this morning. NBC or USA or whoever's showing these Games could have shown the event live, but instead they had the U.S.-Spain basketball game (good choice), Argentina-Holland soccer (solid choice) and a doubles tennis match (dumbest choice in TV history).

But I'll be sure to watch tonight when NBC shows the 100-meter sprint and asks me and the rest of the world to pretend we don't know who already won.

Jeez ...

This is why I can't watch

I know that a WR was set, and an American finished third. If it's not live tonight then I really don't care if I miss it.

Even more unfortunate than that, the same thing was true with the thrilling Phelps victory.  Had I seen it live I probably would have crapped myself (so thank goodness that wasnt the case at least), but having already read who won already, it took the joy out of it.  the only place u can see anything live is on the nbc olympic webpage, of course I won't list the exact address here. And even then there are only limited events they show live.  At least we get to see USA basketball crush everyone live *yawn*.

That is not true. All of Phelps races have been shown live at night. Since his races have been before noon Beijing time they have been on at night in NBC prime time. I also disagree with the assertion that not many events are available live online. I have gotten to see most of what I wanted to. Because of the time difference you have to be willing to stay up late and be tired for work. But hey, not all olympics can be in the western hemisphere.

ok, but what u want to watch isn't nesacarrily what everyone else is looking to see, and as i said before, NBC is selective as to what they are willing to show.

Fair enough. One of the things I do like about the online broadcasts is that it is commercial free, without announcers and the definition is good quality. I've  watched a few of the non-US basketball games online. Also, last night I watched the US versus Croatia live in water polo as much out of curiosity as for the fact that they are the top two teams in the group. But I get your point.

hmm let me see we have one of the 3 greatest tennis players of all time going for a Gold Medal and thats considered a worse option than a pool play soccer match....Not following that logic

Here's the vid of Usain Bolt (non-english)

Hey NBC,

Honestly this is the 21st century century.  You can't control the content that goes up.  If you don't put up the content at least 30 minutes after the race, you are not a relevant network.  People want to watch this race not once but multiple times and they want to watch it right away.   They want to show it to their friends and post for others to comment on.

This is why I can't watch

Why I do not watch is a simple question to answer. Before the internet and the hundreds of news media outlets, it was very easy to avoid seeing a score in the paper and if you were waiting to watch the event (game or race, etc) you just told your buddies you did not want to know. Now the media is in such a hurry to get the score or highlight or even the stats out FIRST, they forget that people may have had things to do during the LIVE event and inundate us with them. If the Sports media would take a little time to consider the fans then this would not be an issue.

I remember when sportscasters would say things like " If you tape the game and do not want the score you have 30 seconds to turn away" Yes I know that is when the world had a little respect for their fellow man. Days long gone by the way side I am afraid. I am not limiting this to just payed sportscasters, I realize that the blogger section of the world has the same disrespect.
