Vitale, in the HoF?!? There goes the neighborhood

Posted on: April 7, 2008 4:27 pm

Dick Vitale is in the Basketball Hall of Fame, which I suppose means I'm about to kick the bucket. Because at this time last year I wrote something along the lines of, "Dick Vitale will make the Hall of Fame over my dead body."

Well, shoot. If someone can pry that rifle from Charleton Heston's dead cold hands, I guess someone can pry Vitale's neck from my teeth and let him into the Hall. But I don't get it. I understand he's famous. I understand he's popular. I understand he loves basketball. The same can be said for Jack Nicholson. Is he going into the Basketball Hall of Fame next?

Nicholson has his own Hall of Fame. It's called the Academy Awards. But if I'm Nicholson, I'm looking at Vitale's entry into the same shrine that houses Bill Russell, Oscar Robertson and Larry Bird, and I'm wondering what's next:

An Oscar for Bugs Bunny?

with fairness to bugs bunny, space jam was probably the highlight of cinema on basketball.

Dick Vitale is to college basketball what Howard Cossell or Burt Sugar is to boxing. He is the resident expert.

Sure, he can be obnoxious and he always roots for UNC and Duke but he is a big part of college hoops.

Maybe they should put his bust behind the likes of Boob Knight and Coach K so that he can continue to kiss their arses for all eternity.

I don't understand the vitriol towards Dickie V.  He's been nothing if not an ambassador for the basketball.  For over 25 years, Vitale has been a fixture on ESPN. I don't think it is coincidental that the popularity of college basketball exploded after he became a fixture on television.

Media-types from other sports have made their respective Hall of Fames.  Baseball even has a wing of their greatest.  I think its fitting that basketball is acknowledging those that have contributed to the game.

Oh yeah, Bugs Bunny won an Oscar in 1958 for Knighty Knight Bugs.  He was nominated two other times as well.

Vitale ranks second in obnoxiousness to Stephen A. Smith.  So annoying I would rather turn off the television then listen to him speak.

If Ozzie Smith can make the baseball hall of fame I don't see where Vitale is that far off.  Remember when Smith was inducted???  All of the sportwriters were claiming he should be in because of the entertainment value he brought to games.  He did back flips and liked to dive for balls instead of being in the right position to begin with.  It's all about entertainment, not about achievement.

Nice get on Bugs Bunny's Oscar.  But as for Vitale being an ambassador . . . well, you've got 7 letters too many.  Maybe he's getting in for his 34-60 coaching record with the Pistons.

If Ozzie Smith can make the baseball hall of fame I don't see where Vitale is that far off.you get the dumbest post of the day award.......ozzie smith had 13 consecutive gold gloves .......and is argueably the best defensive shortstop of all time.......he did a little more than a few back flips and unnecessary dives.......
