Hokies report: Inside slant
Two weeks ago, fifth-year senior Sean Glennon seemed to be Virginia Tech's best option at quarterback. Now, he feels as if he's fighting to remain a part of the Hokies' offense. Glennon started Saturday's home opener against Furman, but he split snaps with sophomore Tyrod Taylor, who had his redshirt lifted last week. Tech divided playing time evenly between the two in the first half, but the system wasn't very effective. The Hokies struggled mightily on offense en route to a 3-0 halftime lead against the lower-division Paladins. Taylor saw the majority of the playing time after halftime, leading Tech on two of its three touchdown drives in the 24-7 win. "(Saturday), the second half, was the first time a red flag went off in my mind," Glennon said. "Like I said before, I was told this game was going to work like last year (when he and Taylor shared playing time down the stretch), so I had no reason to believe something like that was going to happen. "Now that it did, I'm a little concerned." Glennon completed 2-of-6 passes for 32 yards and an interception in the first half. The Hokies brought him in during their first drive of the second half, after Taylor took off on a 50-yard run and had to come out because of a tweaked ankle, and tossed a 10-yard touchdown pass to running back Kenny Lewis. He didn't see much playing time after that. Taylor played 17 snaps in the second half to Glennon's eight. Taylor had first balked at the idea of splitting playing time again this season with Glennon, which was apparently one of the reasons why the team wanted to redshirt him when the season started. But Taylor said Saturday he had softened his opinion of splitting snaps. "As of right now, I'm just going out there and playing," he said. "If they decide to do two quarterbacks, I'll just go out there and try to help the team." SEASON RECAP East Carolina 27, Virginia Tech 22: The Hokies struggled offensively and made some critical tackling mistakes on defense. ECU's T.J. Lee blocked a punt and returned it 27 yards for the game-winning touchdown with 1:52 left. Virginia Tech 24, Furman 7: The Hokies scored three touchdowns in less than three minutes in the third quarter to break open the game after leading only 3-0 at halftime. The team's tackling was much better, and the run game took a big step forward, thanks to the addition of QB Tyrod Taylor, who had his redshirt lifted earlier in the week.
