--Senior DE Brian Orakpo (6-4, 260) has been named to the watch list for the 2008 Lott Trophy, awarded to college football's defensive player of the year. He has appeared in 35 career games and has 19 tackles for loss, 10.5 sacks, 32 pressures, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery. He was the defensive MVP of the 2007 Holiday Bowl.

--Stuck behind Colt McCoy, John Chiles and Sherrod Harris on the depth chart, redshirt freshman QB G.J. Kinne has decided to transfer to another school. "Quarterbacks transfer in college football. That's life for this position," he said. "I've made great memories, great friends and have been blessed with experiences most can only watch. So the answer is no, I have no regrets."

SPRING MOVERS

WR James Kirkendoll -- The sophomore started with the first unit alongside returnees Quan Cosby and Jordan Shipley in the spring game, but will face stiff competition at split end this summer from Dan Buckner, Brandon Collins and Malcolm Williams. Kirkendoll showed no lingering effects from a hip injury that sidelined him for five games in 2007.

TE Blaine Irby -- As the Longhorns' most experienced pass-catching tight end, the 6-3, 240-pound sophomore is the leading beneficiary of Jermichael Finley's surprise decision to turn pro after his sophomore year. He played in 11 games as a true freshman in 2007.

DE Henry Melton -- The 6-3, 265-pound former running back has worked his way to the top of the defensive depth chart with hustle and athleticism. He appeared in 10 games last season and tallied 11 tackles, three pressures, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.

S Earl Thomas -- The redshirt freshman may have locked up one safety spot with his consistent performance this spring, pending the recovery of junior Ishie Oduegwu from a shoulder injury. Coaches praise his instincts, closing speed and toughness.

QUOTE TO NOTE
"If you're not doing what you're supposed to do, he's not going to play you if you don't hustle. But he'll be the first one to pat you on the back and jump up and chest bump you if you do something well. I've really been impressed. You can't be hard on them all the time, and he's got the great balance of both and the kids have really bought into him." -- Texas head coach Mack Brown, on new defensive coordinator Will Muschamp.
