Spartans report: Inside slant
The Spartans' once-formidable defense continued to show signs of cracking Saturday in a 41-17 loss at Nevada. Wolf Pack quarterback Colin Kaepernick and running back Vai Taua each rushed for more than 100 yards and they combined for three touchdowns. The Pack enjoyed a play of 30-plus yards on each of their first five scoring drives, including two big plays that converted third-and-long. The Spartans passed for 301 yards, their second-best total of the season, but were forced to play catch-up throughout. "Obviously, we were soundly beaten," San Jose State coach Dick Tomey said. "We had a little window of opportunity to get back in the second half, but we just couldn't get it done. I'm still amazed that they lost twice in conference." SEASON RECAP Nebraska 35, San Jose State 12 -- The Spartans were within 14-12 early in the fourth quarter, but a kickoff return for a touchdown allowed the Huskers to pull away. San Jose State could have led in the fourth if not for two missed field goals and a missed PAT. San Jose State 35, San Diego State 10 -- The Spartans rushed for 293 yards and five touchdowns. They outgained the Aztecs 476 to 146 and held them to just 6 rushing yards. Stanford 23, San Jose State 10 -- The Spartans led 10-7 at halftime but were buried by eight sacks and poor tackling. QB Kyle Reed was 23-of-26, but the Spartans only netted 110 yards in the pass game. San Jose State 20, Hawaii 17 -- K Jared Strubeck nailed 50- and 47-yard field goals in the fourth quarter to give the Spartans a comeback win. The defense forced six turnovers, recorded six sacks and shut out the Warriors in the second half. San Jose State 30, Utah State 7 -- The Spartans scored 21 unanswered points in the second quarter to seize control of the game. The defense held Utah State to 190 total yards, scored a touchdown, forced two turnovers and registered four sacks. San Jose State 31, New Mexico State 14 -- The Spartans won this one with their defense as they had two interception returns for touchdowns to spark a big first-half lead against the prolific Aggies. Boise State 33, San Jose State 16 -- In their showdown for first place in the WAC, the Spartans failed in their bid to become an elite team in the conference. They had just two first downs in the first half and had to play from behind all game. San Jose State 30, Idaho 24 -- Backup quarterback Myles Eden excelled in a spot start, throwing two touchdown passes to David Richmond. K Jared Strubeck added three field goals. Louisiana Tech 21, San Jose State 0 -- The Spartans gained just 148 yards, threw two costly interceptions and were shut out at home for the first time in 40 years. QB Myles Eden was 3-for-8 with two interceptions -- one that set up a TD and one that was returned for a TD. Nevada 41, San Jose State 17 -- Nevada outrushed San Jose State 333 to minus-23 and jumped out to a 17-0 lead. The Spartans never got closer than that the rest of the way, despite throwing for 301 yards. Copyright (C) 2008 The Sports Xchange. All Rights Reserved. |
