Head coach David Bailiff enters his second season in a much-improved atmosphere at Rice.

Taking over shortly before spring practice last year, Bailiff only had about 50 players available due to a rash of injuries. Now he's got 70, and they're used to his systems and terminology.

As a result, Bailiff and his staff are focusing on fundamentals and execution, especially on defense. The Owls finished last in C-USA in defense last season, and they lost two stalwarts up front to graduation.

However, with linebacker Brian Raines, safety Andrew Sendejo and defensive end Scott Solomon all back, there is a solid foundation.

Rice is specifically looking for pass rushers. The Owls' front four accounted for just seven sacks and the defense gave up a whopping 37 touchdown passes last year.

With an explosive offense led by quarterback Chase Clement and wideout Jarett Dillard, Rice doesn't need to field a top-flight defense to better its 3-9 mark from last season.

A respectable defense would suffice. Coaches believe they have faster, more talented players available to choose from this spring.
