Beavers report: Inside slant
One more down. Two more to go, not that the Beavers (7-3, 6-1 in the Pac-10) were still willing to say anything about the Rose Bowl even after a 34-21 win over California. "These guys believe these games are fun, so why start thinking about something down the road that isn't a for-sure thing at all?" Oregon State coach Mike Riley said. "I don't want them to get uptight about it." Around the team, however, there's a growing sense of what is there for the taking with two more victories. Beat Arizona on Saturday and Oregon on Nov. 29 and the Beavers would play in the Rose Bowl for the first time in 44 years. "The thing about having that in the backs of our minds is we get hungry for it," said Oregon State quarterback Lyle Moevao, back after missing the previous six quarters with a shoulder injury. "We want it so bad, and we know what we have to do to get there." There's been increased national media interest of late. The crowd of 45,969 in Reser Stadium on Saturday was a record turnout. The game against Cal was televised by ABC, the first time in five seasons the Beavers have seen that network at one of their games for a regional telecast. Yes, it's becoming crowded on the bandwagon. "If they want to ride with us, they're going to ride with us," receiver James Rodgers said. "We know what we're capable of doing. "All it means to us is we've got to practice even harder." SEASON RECAP Stanford 36, Oregon State 28 -- Despite Lyle Moevao passing for 404 yards, his two interceptions and a lost fumble in the final minute opened the way for Stanford to record its first home win over the Beavers since 1999. Penn State 45, Oregon State 14 -- Daryll Clark and Evan Royster took turns making big plays against the Beavers' defense as the Nittany Lions piled up 454 yards of total offense, all but 17 coming in the first three quarters in dropping OSU to 0-2. The Beavers were down 28-0 before the offense crossed midfield on a drive that featured freshman TB Quizz Rodgers, who scored both touchdowns for OSU in rushing for 99 yards. Oregon State 45, Hawaii 7 -- Quizz Rodgers became the first true freshman in seven seasons to rush for over 100 yards, finishing with 110 on 26 carries and two touchdowns, and Lyle Moevao ran for one score and passed to three different receivers for touchdowns as the Beavers dominated. After allowing a touchdown on Hawaii's opening drive, the OSU defense held the Warriors to 153 yards and nine first downs over the final 55 minutes. Oregon State 27, USC 21 -- The Beavers roared out to a 21-0 halftime lead and made it stand up for an upset of the top-ranked Trojans. Quizz Rodgers rushed 37 times for 186 yards and scored two touchdowns and his brother James Rodgers caught two touchdown passes from Lyle Moevao. The OSU defense came up with two turnovers, each setting up a touchdown, and limited the Trojans to 313 yards of total offense. Utah 31, Oregon State 28 -- The Beavers were denied a second consecutive victory over an unbeaten and ranked opponent when Utah scored 11 points in the final 69 seconds. The OSU defense that had kept the Utes at bay for most of the game saw Utah QB Brian Johnson complete 7-of-8 passes for 91 yards on Utah's final two possessions, the first ending with Johnson's touchdown pass and subsequent run for the two-point conversion to tie the game, the second ending with Louis Sakoda's 37-yard field goal as time expired. Oregon State 66, Washington State 13 -- The Beavers set a high for points against a conference opponent as eight different players recorded touchdowns. OSU rushed for 323 yards, with Quizz Rodgers recording his fourth consecutive 100-yard game with 168 on 23 carries. The Beavers finished with 548 yards of total offense. Oregon State 34, Washington 13 -- James Rodgers ran for two touchdowns and took a pass in for another score, and his brother, freshman Quizz Rodgers, rushed for a touchdown as the Beavers beat the Huskies for a fifth consecutive season. The Rodgers brothers combined for 282 yards of offense as Oregon State joined a four-way tie for first place in the Pac-10. Oregon State 27, Arizona State 25 -- Reserve QB Sean Canfield replaced injured Lyle Moevao in the second quarter and passed for 218 yards and two touchdowns as the Beavers twice rallied from deficits in the second half. It still came down to DE Victor Butler intercepting a pass on a two-point conversion attempt that would have knotted the score with 21 seconds remaining. Oregon State 34, UCLA 6 -- The Beavers broke away from a 3-3 halftime tie as Sean Canfield, filling in again for Lyle Moevao, threw two touchdown passes. The Pac-10's leading rusher, Quizz Rodgers, added another 144 yards to his season total, raising it to 1,089, a conference record for a freshman. The defense held the Bruins to a pair of field goals and came up with four turnovers. Oregon State 34, California 21 -- James Rodgers returned a kickoff 86 yards for a touchdown, and Sammie Stroughter's 56-yard punt return set up another score as the Beavers won their fifth consecutive game. The OSU defense held Cal to 94 yards of offense in the second half and 232 total yards with five quarterback sacks among the 10 tackles for lost yardage. Copyright (C) 2008 The Sports Xchange.
