Wolf Pack report: Inside slant
Nevada coach Chris Ault revamped his defensive coaching staff in the off-season, hiring Oregon State defensive backs coach Nigel Burton and Colorado State's James Ward to coach cornerbacks. Last year's defensive coordinator, Ken Wilson, moved to linebackers coach, and linebackers coach Charlie Camp (resigned) and cornerbacks coach Kim McCloud (Baylor) are no longer on the staff. The Wolf Pack also lost linebacker Kevin Porter, who will not play again because of a neck injury. Porter started 10 games last season and played in all 13 for the 6-7 Wolf Pack, which lost in the New Mexico Bowl. Revamping the dismal defense is priority No. 1 around Reno. To that end, the Wolf Pack has added eight defensive backs to the program. Nevada had just six interceptions all last season. During spring practice, the defensive line showed an improved pass rush. In the spring game, the defense had 11 tackles for loss, including three sacks, and intercepted three passes. The offense, led by sophomore quarterback Colin Kaepernick, senior running back Luke Lippincott and a veteran offensive line, should be fine. Copyright (C) 2008 The Sports Xchange.
