Golden Flashes report: Inside slant
An old familiar foe reared its ugly head when Kent State lost 48-28 at Iowa State. The Golden Flashes lost four fumbles and had two punts blocked. A year ago, KSU was 12th in the 13-team Mid-American Conference with a minus-11 turnover margin. "The disappointing part for us was that we self-destructed," Kent State coach Doug Martin said. "You're not going to have a chance to win no matter how good our defense is if you turn the ball over. We never gave our defense a chance." For as well as KSU senior quarterback Julian Edelman played (171 yards passing and three touchdowns, 65 yards rushing), he also lost two fumbles. "They didn't stop us," Edelman said. "We stopped ourselves." For his own part, Edelman said, "[It's] carelessness. Not holding the ball with two hands, and paying attention to detail." A red-zone fumble and a fumble on its own one-yard line by Kent State made things much easier for Iowa State. The Flashes shocked ISU 23-14 in Ames, Iowa, to open last season. Last season, KSU ranked at the bottom of the conference in net punt yardage. Enter freshman punter Matt Rinehart. Unfortunately, two blocked punts added to the trend of special-teams woes. Kent also coughed up a punt return deep in its own territory. "We were great on special teams and offense [against Boston College], and then to go out there and do what we did tonight," Martin said. "What we did was not right." Sadly for Kent State, it's the same old story. Plenty of yardage but too many turnovers and special-teams miscues to win. SEASON RECAP Boston College 21, Kent State 0: Fifth-year senior quarterback Chris Crane rushed for two touchdowns as the Eagles overpowered the Golden Flashes at Cleveland Browns Stadium. BC outgained Kent State 336 yards to 260. Iowa State 48, Kent State 28: The Flashes lost four fumbles and had two punts blocked. Kent State outgained the Cyclones 410-374 and had more first downs.
