Warriors report: Inside slant
A week into the season, the Warriors already have their third starting quarterback. Junior Inoke Funaki, who was effective as the third-stringer against Florida, will start the home opener Saturday against Weber State. Junior college transfer Brent Rausch won the starting job in fall camp, but he injured his arm and lost his spot for the season opener at Florida. He played but was two of seven for 14 yards with an interception for a touchdown. Another juco transfer Greg Alexander stepped in as the starter at Florida and struggled mightily. He was 11 of 21 for 57 yards with two picks, one returned for a touchdown. Funaki was eight of 11 for 110 yards with a touchdown and an interception. He led the Warriors to all 10 of their points in the fourth quarter. Funaki had been the co-starting quarterback after spring ball, before the transfers arrived. "I was really happy the way he competed," coach Greg McMackin told the Honolulu Advertiser. "Here's a guy who's been in the program for a while, but didn't complain or gripe. We went with the two other quarterbacks over him because they had stronger arms, basically, and a little more height." Copyright (C) 2008 The Sports Xchange. All Rights Reserved. |
