SPRING OBJECTIVES
BC needs to find a starting quarterback to replace potential first-round draft pick Matt Ryan. Chris Crane is the heir apparent but transfer Codi Boek was also in camp. The Eagles also need a starting running back, and freshman-to-be Josh Haden, considered the front-runner and listed as No. 1 on the spring depth chart, was an early high school grad who was in camp. The Eagles also entered spring looking for a left tackle to replace Cherilus and started out by shifting the right side (Anthony Costanzo and guard Clif Ramsey) to the left.
BUILDING BLOCKS
LB Brian Toal returns after a year off to rehab his surgically repaired shoulder and he's the leader of a defense that brings enough back to get the job done -- with the help of bulky tackle pair B.J. Raji and Ron Brace and talented young LB Mark Herzlich. The offense will be built on youth and inexperience but the receivers had made a ton of catches.
SCHEDULE SITUATION
The Eagles were asked by Army to delay their series and replaced a road game at the Academy with a tougher home game against Central Florida. The Eagles open against Kent State at Cleveland Browns Stadium and have Virginia Tech and Notre Dame on the seven-game home schedule.
QUOTE TO NOTE
"That's one of the big question marks we've got right now going into the spring. We've got to see what our guys can do. Chris (Crane) is just an unknown quantity right now because I don't know what he can do. He's never had to do it. But I think from watching some of the cut-ups from last spring and fall, he's going to be fine. It's just, what are his strengths? What can he do best to help us put points the board?" -- Boston College coach Jeff Jagodzinski, on his quarterback situation with Matt Ryan heading to the NFL.
