Blazers report: Inside slant
A poorly timed bye week forced UAB to dwell on a humiliating 70-14 loss to Southern Miss for two long weeks. "The TV in the locker room -- Coach put a big board over it that says '70-14,'" center Jake Seitz told the Birmingham News. "We've had to stare at it all week. I know it never left my mind once. I think we kind of used that as fuel for this game." The inspired Blazers (3-7, 2-4 C-USA) snapped a 19-game road losing streak Saturday with a 41-24 victory at Tulane (2-8, 1-5). Quarterback Joe Webb rushed for 130 yards and three touchdowns and accounted for 284 of UAB's 426 yards of offense against the Green Wave. The defense picked off four passes, including two by Kevin Sanders and one returned 36 yards for a touchdown by Matt Taylor. "We're very happy, but we've got two more ball games," head coach Neil Callaway said. "Our goal after the Southern Miss game was to win three for each other and build some momentum, so we got two more to go." SEASON RECAP Tulsa 45, UAB 22: For the second straight season, the Blazers allowed more than 600 yards of offense by the Golden Hurricane. Frantrell Forrest's 90-yard kickoff return for a touchdown and 32-yard touchdown catch and quarterback Joe Webb's 136 rushing yards and two TD passes weren't nearly enough in a lopsided conference loss at home. Florida Atlantic 49, UAB 34: Joe Webb passed for 326 yards and two touchdowns and Frantrell Forrest had 11 receptions for 149 yards and a touchdown to lead the Blazers, but the defense could not get a stop. Florida Atlantic scored touchdowns on four of its first six possessions and three of its last four. Rusty Smith passed for 325 yards and three TDs and Charles Pierre rushed for 138 yards and two scores for the Owls. Tennessee 35, UAB 3: Jonathan Crompton passed for 240 yards and two touchdowns, Lucas Taylor caught nine balls for 132 yards and the tandem of Arian Foster and Lennon Creer gained 193 yards on 20 carries as the Volunteers dominated both sides of the line of scrimmage in Knoxville. Joe Webb tossed three interceptions for the Blazers, who were outgained 548-275. UAB 45, Alabama State 10: The Blazers celebrated their first win since Oct. 13, 2006 as Joe Webb passed for 238 yards, rushed for 121 yards and accounted for three scores against the Hornets. Rashaud Slaughter had two touchdown runs, Jeffery Anderson had two touchdown catches and the defense held Alabama State to 276 total yards, including just 17 rushing yards. South Carolina 26, UAB 13: The Blazers didn't make a first down until 6:39 remained in the second quarter and finished with 207 yards of total offense in the loss at Columbia. Joe Webb passed for 140 yards and two interceptions and was UAB's leading rusher with 22 yards and a touchdown. Brandon Carlisle had two interceptions and Bryant Turner had three sacks to lead the defense. Memphis 33, UAB 30: Joe Webb's 10-yard touchdown run with 4:10 remaining was his fourth TD of the game and knotted the score at 30-30, but the Tigers responded with a 72-yard drive and got a game-winning 25-yard field goal with two seconds to play. The Blazers outgained Memphis 455-436, but hurt themselves with 11 penalties for 127 yards and two fumbles by Webb. Houston 45, UAB 20: The Blazers outgained the Cougars 277-174 during the first half, including a 116-13 edge on the ground, but gave up 42 unanswered points and 375 yards in the second half and lost their 18th consecutive road game. Joe Webb passed for 234 yards and a touchdown and led UAB with 72 rushing yards and a touchdown. UAB 23, Marshall 21: Joe Webb had 352 yards of offense (135 rushing, 217 passing) and the Blazers survived a late comeback bid by the Thundering Herd to claim their first conference victory since Oct. 13, 2007, against Tulane. Webb's 28-yard touchdown run gave UAB a 23-14 lead in the fourth quarter, but Marshall got a defensive score and lined up for a go-ahead 37-yard field goal that sailed wide right with 2:50 left. Southern Miss 70, UAB 14: The Blazers lost to the Golden Eagles for the ninth straight time and allowed the most points since moving to Division I-A in 1996 and the most since losing to Kansas 72-0 in 1994. Southern Miss outgained UAB 610-223 and finished with 463 yards on the ground and nine rushing touchdowns, including a school-record five by quarterback Austin Davis. UAB 41, Tulane 24: The Blazers ended a 19-game road losing streak by rushing for 272 yards and intercepting four passes at the Superdome in New Orleans. Quarterback Joe Webb rushed for 130 yards and three touchdowns and Kevin Sanders intercepted two passes to lead UAB, whose last road victory was on Nov. 19, 2005 at UTEP.
