WASHINGTON -- Alex Ovechkin had two goals and an assist, Michael Nylander added two goals, and the Washington Capitals rallied for a 5-2 victory against the Carolina Hurricanes in a preseason game Thursday night.

This was the second successive night the two Southeast Division rivals met. The Capitals scored a 4-1 victory against the Hurricanes on Wednesday in Raleigh, N.C.

Nylander is returning after missing much of last season with a shoulder injury. He scored Washington's first goal after the Capitals fell behind 2-0, then put the Capitals in front for good on a back-hander 2:20 into the third period.

Chris Bourque added an insurance goal at 6:08 of the period to give Washington a 4-2 lead.

Ovechkin scored on a second-period penalty shot and got the game's final goal in the third period. The Capitals scored three third-period goals. Full story

Lightning 4, Rangers 2

NEW YORK -- Ryan Malone and Martin St. Louis scored 2:18 apart in the third period to rally Tampa Bay.

In a matchup of teams that will open the regular season against each other next weekend in Prague, Czech Republic, the Lightning pulled off the late comeback despite being outshot 47-25. Karri Ramo played the entire game and was sharp in making 45 saves.

New York had 18 shots in each of the first two periods but produced only a pair of goals from Dan Fritsche and Lauri Korpikoski. Backup goalie Steve Valiquette also was in the nets for the whole game, giving Henrik Lundqvist the night off.

Fritsche, who came to the Rangers in a big summer deal with Columbus, gave New York a 1-0 lead 8:58 into the first period with a snap shot from the dot in the middle of the right circle. Chris Gratton tied it at 11:37.

Korpikoski netted his second goal of the preseason at 7:56 of the middle period, slipping a shot past Ramo.

Red Wings 4, Bruins 3

HALIFAX, Nova Scotia -- Brad Stuart scored midway through the third period to give Detroit a victory.

Henrik Zetterberg, Brett Lebda and Cory Emmerton also scored for Stanley Cup champion Detroit (1-0-1).

P.J. Axelsson, Jeremy Reich and Martin St. Pierre tallied for Boston (1-1-1).

Detroit played without captain Niklas Lidstrom. He broke his nose in Wednesday's 3-2 shootout loss to Montreal.

Flyers 4, Islanders 0

LONDON, Ontario -- Jean-Sebastien Aubin made 18 saves in the first two periods and Martin Biron stopped six shots in the third for Philadelphia.

Mike Richards and Joffrey Lupul each had a goal and an assist and Mike Knuble and Jeff Carter added goals for the Flyers (2-1-0).

Yann Danis made 22 saves for the Islanders (1-1-0).

Thrashers 4, Predators 2

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Grant Stevenson scored two goals and added an assist to lead Atlanta past Nashville Predators in the preseason opener for both teams.

Garnet Exelby and Junior Lessard also scored for Atlanta, while Kevin Klein and Ryan Jones scored for Nashville.

Stevenson played in 47 regular season and five playoff games for the San Jose Sharks in the 2005-06 season, and is looking to return to the NHL after playing the last two seasons in the American Hockey League.

Ondrej Pavelec played the entire game in goal for the Thrashers. He looked strong, finishing with 36 saves.

In a penalty-filled game, Atlanta finished with two power-play goals in 11 opportunities. Nashville scored one power-play goal in eight attempts with the man advantage.

Avalanche 4, Stars 2

DALLAS -- T.J. Hensick scored a tiebreaking power-play goal early in the third period for Colorado.

Matt Hendricks' empty-netter with 13 seconds left clinched the victory for the Avalanche (1-1). Ryan Smyth and Brian Willsie also scored for Colorado.

Mike Ribeiro and Brenden Morrow were the goal scorers for the Stars (0-2).

With the score tied at 2, Hensick converted Smyth's pass at 5:56 of the final period, beating Dallas rookie goaltender Matt Climie.

Oilers 3, Panthers 2 (SO)

EDMONTON, Alberta -- Marc Pouliot scored the deciding goal in a shootout.

Mathieu Garon made 30 saves to help Edmonton improve to 1-1-2 and avenge a 3-2 shootout loss to Florida (2-1-0) on Wednesday night in Edmonton.

Sam Gagner also had a goal for Edmonton in the shootout. Tyler Spurgeon and Robert Nilsson scored in regulation for the Oilers.

Radek Dvorak and Anthony Stewart scored regulation goals for the Panthers, and Michael Frolik had a goal in the shootout.

Flames 3, Coyotes 1

CALGARY -- Michael Cammalleri and Andre Roy scored for Calgary.

Matthew Lombardi also scored for the Flames (2-1-0), while Miikka Kiprusoff and Curtis McElhinney shared the goaltending duties. Viktor Tikhonov, a first-round pick (28th overall) by the Coyotes in the 2008 NHL Draft, scored the lone goal for Phoenix.

The Coyotes, who also lost 3-2 to the Flames on Wednesday night in Winnipeg, are now winless in three exhibition games. They were playing without the likes of goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov, defenceman Ed Jovanovski and forwards Olli Jokinen, Shane Doan, Peter Mueller and highly touted rookie Kyle Turris.

Lombardi opened the scoring during a Calgary power play at 9:37 of the first when he pounced on a rebound and deposited the puck in the net past Phoenix goalie Mikael Tellqvist while taking a hit from defenceman Logan Stephenson.

In his first game with the Flames, Cammalleri redirected a pass from Jerome Iginla into the Phoenix goal early in the second period. Roy then spotted a loose puck behind Tellqvist and alertly deposited it into the wide-open net.
