Letang even more valuable now: Sergei Gonchar will be kept out of the Pittsburgh Penguins' lineup at least through the regular-season opener in two weeks because of a dislocated left shoulder. Gonchar, who sustained the injury during the first period of the Penguins' preseason opener Saturday, led the reigning Eastern Conference champions in ice time last season and was third on the team in scoring with 12 goals and 53 assists. Pittsburgh general manager Ray Shero said surgery is an option for the 34-year-old defenseman, who is entering his 14th NHL season, but Shero would offer no other timetable. Gonchar's injury means that Pittsburgh will open the season without their top two defensemen. Ryan Whitney underwent foot surgery last month and is likely out until December. That means second-year defenseman Kris Letang probably becomes the primary offensive blue liner for Pittsburgh.

Shero said it was too early to speculate on the minimum amount of time Gonchar will miss, but he will miss some time and that means Letang will be looked to lead the offensive scoring on defense. Letang, 22, is a promising offensive-minded defenseman with a right-handed shot -- the only player among the Penguins' defense corps that doesn't shoot left-handed. Letang had six goals and 11 assists during his rookie season in 2007-08. He also had 23 penalty minutes, one power-play goal and three game-winning scores. Letang has the most offensive potential of the remaining defenseman and is now a Fantasy sleeper heading into 2008-09.
