Brown kept on Canucks roster: The Sports Xchange reports Canucks C Kyle Wellwood and RW Mike Brown were probably the happiest healthy scratches in the NHL on Thursday night. Wellwood overcame an early failed fitness test to make the team ahead of C Matt Pettinger, who was waived and sent to the AHL. Brown was actually scheduled to join Pettinger in the minors, but once the Canucks got wind that other teams might pluck the tough winger off the waiver wire, they decided to bring him back to the big club to start the regular season.

Brown and Jeff Cowan, who was waived and sent to St. Louis's AHL affiliate in Peoria, lost the battle for a fourth-line job to Rick Rypien, who had a strong preseason but also has a long injury history, suggesting they made need someone to fill in at some point. "We intended to put (Brown) on waivers, but when we found out there was a lot of interest in him we decided that we wouldn't do that," new general manager Mike Gillis said. "We didn't want to lose a good young player like him for nothing. When it became clear he wouldn't clear waivers, we called him." Brown, 23, played in 19 games with the Canucks last season as a rookie, recording a goal and 55 penalty minutes in 19 games. Brown is nothing more than a checking-line forward when in the NHL and has little to no Fantasy value.
