Rangers add Redden to blue line: As the Rangers waited for news on free agents Jaromir Jagr, Mats Sundin and Sean Avery, they stayed active elsewhere in their ongoing rebuilding process. At the end of Day 1 of the NHL free-agent shopping season, New York returned top defenseman Michal Rozsival and added prime pickup Wade Redden to help him on the blue line. Redden, who had a down year with the disappointing Ottawa Senators last season, weighed several offers throughout the day before agreeing to terms with the Rangers on a six-year deal that will pay him $6.5 million per season. "In our opinion he's the best first-passer in the game," Rangers general manager Glen Sather said. "He moves the puck up exceptionally. He's somebody that we had targeted immediately. He was our No. 1 guy on defense, as well as Rozsival." (Updated 07/02/2008).

Fantasy Analysis
Redden scored only six goals and had 38 points in 80 games with the Senators last season. "The time has definitely come for me to move on. A fresh start is going to be exactly what I need to rejuvenate myself," he said. "I feel I've got a lot to offer the Rangers on the ice and off the ice. I'm certainly looking forward to a new beginning and a new chapter." Redden now becomes the Rangers' top offensive defenseman and his numbers are likely to stay the same, if not increase some. New York is solid defensively, so Redden's plus/minus rating shouldn't suffer. He still remains a high-end Fantasy forward Draft Day. (Updated 07/02/2008).
