Titans report: Inside slant
--The deadline to reach a new agreement for franchised defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth came and went on Tuesday with no new contract being worked out. That means Haynesworth, who was given the franchise tag in February, will play for the one-year tender amount of $7.25 million once he's signed it. There is no guarantee that Haynesworth will sign the tender in time to report when training camp opens on July 25. Negotiations on a new contract are now put on hold until after the regular season. Titans general manager Mike Reinfeldt said shortly after Tuesday's deadline that the franchise tender amount would make Haynesworth the highest-paid player at his position in the NFL this season. In terms of base salary, that is true, but Haynesworth's agent Chad Speck begged to differ, pointing out that the Titans were overlooking the prorated signing bonus money other players such as Tommie Harris, Tommy Kelly, Shaun Rogers, Kris Jenkins and Corey Williams received, meaning all make more money this season than Haynesworth. Speck indicated that all overtures he made to the Titans front office on Haynesworth's behalf were rejected. "From our perspective we offered several fair and balanced proposals to the Titans over the past few days that would have paid Albert like one of the top defensive tackles in football -- all of which were rejected," Speck said. "We moved considerably off those proposals as the deadline approached today in an effort to close the deal -- these movements were also rejected by the Titans. While we certainly respect the Titans position, it is unfortunate that Albert will not be signed long term when training camp opens next week." Speck wants some concessions by Reinfeldt and the Titans that they will not franchise him again in 2009, if he makes certain clauses and incentives he wants put into the tender before Haynesworth signs it. Reinfeldt, who said he was optimistic Haynesworth would report to camp on time, is not completely against that, but it might be difficult to determine the exact parameters the Titans would accept along those lines. "I think it's kind of premature to tell," Reinfeldt said. "We'll continue to have those discussions, and I'm sure they'll pick up in the next couple of days as to what are the specifics of the agreement." CAMP CALENDAR Copyright (C) 2008 The Sports Xchange.
